Default Obvious Dye Jobs

I'm 58 and my hair is mostly silver/grey.
I don't mind it, that's just how it is.
But I`ve noticed that some of my musical idols, much older than me, have started to look decidedly 'strange' with their very obvious dyed hair.
You know the color I'm talking about, orange/brown like stale beer. It's a color that only comes in a bottle
It seems to work up to a point but then starts to smack of 'old guy trying to look young' don't you think? Almost sad. Best examples;
-Paul McCartney
-John Fogerty
-Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull- bandana to cover hair loss - dyed beard
-Mick Jagger- the best money can buy
-Gene Simmons-black
-Tony Iommi-black
Forget the dye guys, you are what you are.
None of them would lose a single fan if they went back to 'natural'.
Fans no, wives maybe?

I can see why these rock stars would dye their hair and try to hold onto youthful looks. Unfortunately, rock as a culture doesn't age well. It is for and about youth, and it would really be rather embarrassing to see a bunch of geezers bouncing around trying to relive their peak years of 40 years ago. Time moves on, even if some people don't. I think the big band guys had a much easier time of it in that regard. The music was timeless.

Jimmy Page looks OK with his white hair.
No one would not go to a Led Zeppelin reunion concert because Jimmys hair was white.
But you're right, the music is timeless.

The problem with dying your hair to something other than your natural color for your age is this: you still have an old, wrinkled craggly face. So you might as well just let it go grey or white. It just looks better with the old face. Geeez.

The problem is simple . . . . it takes time and effort. No thanks!

Of course, there are guys who hair stays around and stays (pretty much) the same color... Luck of the draw.

('course it shows up in our beards first...)

But not terrible for a couple of 60+ ol' Kentucky boys.

Oh yeah, Keith cetainly has some major arthritis happening there but I think he said it doesn't get in the way of his playing ... yet.

I saw the Stones play Hyde Park in London , just last year. Well attended by at least 3 generations of fans.
Trust me, they've still got plenty of IT and absolutely ROCKED the park !

I always think Jimmy Page looks like my Grandma these days. If you're going white, you should probably cut it shorter too....

Frankly, most guys look younger without it, and certainly more distinguished. Obvious dye jobs just look ridiculous to me, but to each his own.

Dave, I seem to remember from a previous thread that we share our birthday. (6 March '51 ?)

I too am blessed with a full head of straight, dark brown hair, (tho' showing some tasteful, attractive and age-appropriate grey streaks these days).

Mmmm.. Not sure if your pal Sam counts tho'. Looks a bit of a ginger to me ! Different rules for those guys !

A few years ago I had my hair dyed for a play I was doing. I looked like a politician or a TV evangelist. When the run was over, my wife wanted me to keep the color so I did. For a while. But I just felt like an idiot and let it go gray again.

When this topic comes up, Jeff Beck always comes to mind.
