BTW this track Surrendel blew my mind. I don't think I'll ever get it out of my head... and I don't want to. I didn't know it at the time but this song must have been one of the reasons I picked up the guitar in the first place. It was just waiting for me to find it. And now thanks to you I did!

Cheers,

P.S. The irony being that Isaac has been right in front of my face for years in the title of one of my favorites (Bensusan's dedication of L'Alchimiste). Life is weird that way...
another +1 for Isaac. I remember being utterly mesmerised the first time I saw him perform at a benefit concert being held in my School in the wake of the Lockerbie Disaster.
His classics for me:
Somewhere Tonight, Swingin' Little Guitar Man (from the 'Live' Album)
Through-Us-All (Live, and also 'Solo')
Desert Dance, Saint Peter, Bad News ('Solo')
Sixteen Tons, Late in the Evening ('Slow Down')
Bells of Rhymney, Whiter Shade of Pale ('Days of Forty-Nine')

I was fortunate enough to meet Isaac on several occasions and he was the most amazingly kind and gentle man. I remember that as he finished his concerts he would always hold his guitar upright halfway up the neck and make the guitar give a bow to the audience. A true gent, and sadly missed.

I'm surprised that no-one's mentioned Nils Lofgren's acoustic solo live track 'Keith Don't Go' on his Live album. It gets regular outings at various high-fidelity audiophile equipment shows, and it's worth a listen.

Also, worth mentioning Tony McManus' albums if you like Celtic Fingerstyle. Tony also covered Isaac's Desert Dance on his album Singing Sands (with Alain Genty), but for me the opening Kishor's Tune from Ceol More is just simply Stunning.

For 'English Fingerstyle' Canadee-I-O from Nic Jones' Penguin Eggs is one of the best pieces I've heard (in CGCGCD tuning too!)

Bert Jansch and/or John Renbourn's albums must also rate on anyone's acoustic radar. And let's not forget the Father of DADGAD Dav(e)y Graham.

If you like resonator, get Rainer's Nocturnes, if you can. the best cover I've ever heard of a beatles song: Within you Without you, just pure instrumental.

And there's Bonnie 'Prince' Billy too (aka Will Oldham). Master and Everyone is one of the most intimate guitar/vocal recordings I've EVER heard.
Also José Gonzalez did a track that was featured in a Sony Bravia ad here in the UK, it's on his Veneer album. again minimal but classical guitar and vocals.

I forgot about Mike Dowling's CD Blue Fandango. It's just him, his voice, a National or a Martin guitar. Great melodies, great playing and what a voice.

It started out life as a cassette, became the Antone label's first acoustic offering, and is now out of print. Also two of the tracks have a third player pitching in on it, but otherwise Steve James 'Two Track Mind' is one of my favorites.

"Your Basic Dave Van Ronk" is another.

Fred, wow, you're right. Is he on Spotify or anywhere online?

Weird, cuz I just mentioned him in another thread not two days ago.

I will name a whole concert performance by one individual playing three guitars and the piano (for one song).

It was John Denver performing live in Russia, I think in 1986. A three CD set that was recorded live (and well done) and showcased how well his voice had matured and I cannot hear many, if there are any, flaws in his playing on any song.

I was always amazed by his stamina and ability to hold an audience for hours.

Willie, hi. Actually someone had mentioned those albums early in the thread. We just saw him solo about a month ago. What a wonderful evening.

I'm old and thus old-school. This is a great idea for a thread, and I'm really pleased with people mentioning younger artists.

In my case, two spring instantly to mind: Steve Goodman and Jesse Winchester.

Steve owned every stage he every walk onto, usually within about 30 seconds. Here's a great example:

And Jesse could hold a crowd spellbound. I always felt his shows were like going to a poetry reading:

Can anyone instruct me how to turn these links into a screen capture? I used to know how to do it, but then forgot.

thanks,
scott
