I don't have a favorite, really, and I have quite a variety of different types - because I have too many guitars. I tend not to change them out, I've only changed them in a couple of guitars. I just consider the pups that came with the guitar as the starting point: this is what I have, now what can I do musically with these? What can they do that my other guitars can't? Maybe I'm just hesitant to go too far down the rabbit hole that is the world of pickups - I've seen guys go down there and never come back, lol. But I've had some surprises with stock pups. For example, I bought a Squier Tele about 12 or so years ago because it was a cool-looking limited edition and I figured I could doctor it up and change out whatever was needed, and I assumed that the pups would be the first thing to go. Wrong: the cheapo pups in that guitar are the nastiest, snarliest, 50's-sounding pups that I have in any guitar. For some reason they sound great, and they're the only reason I still have that guitar. So, I guess you never know...

i have an original gold foil that i'd like to pair with a supro string thru for a coodercaster type guitar.

yes, i sure didn't answer your question but i got to elaborate. ha!

What manufacturer of P90s are you using?

Single Coil: Seymour Duncan Vintage Staggered Strat + Custom Staggered Strat
Hunbucker: Naylor Railhammers (the best pickups I've ever heard)

I put Fender 57/62's in my cheap Strat; followed by wiring the bridge P/U to the mid tone pot. I also added the 7 tone jumper. I installed Duncan 59's in a Les Paul clone connected with LP 50's style wiring. Both guitars sound good to my ears. However, I do not have a lot of guitar or pickup experience to say these are my "favorites".

Favorites: the handwounds in my Les Paul and Strat. Both sets were done by Brantley Rewinds in NC to order. Fantastic sound.

Close second: the pickups in my ES-335. I'm pretty sure they're Gibson 57 Classics, but I need to pull one next string to satisfy my curiosity. The Broadcaster + Twisted Tele pair in my Tele is very, very good too.

Hey Clint, what type of Les Paul pickups are they - PAF based?

PAF style, potted, tweaked for extra brightness and clarity.

Dru, I don't have a favorite either. With my 40+ electrics, there isn't a bad set in the bunch. My last electric purchase has a set of TV Jones Duo Trons, the Paul Yandell models and I purchased the guitar to try those pickups. I haven't been disappointed yet! I have to admit I really like the Gretsch sound. -- Darwin

I end up liking most pickups, other than super aggressive sounding stuff.

1980's vintage Gibson stock over-wound zebra dual coil Tim Shaw dirty-fingers (with 12 adjustable poles instead of six).

IMO, Gibson's pinnacle of pickup-ness.

I have tried a huge, huge range, at all price points, and new and vintage, and believe it or not, if I had to choose a single one -- not my approach; I have 3 main player guitars, each different -- but if I had to choose, it would be a basic, medium output Seymour humbucker: Alnico II Pro, '59, or Seth Lover. They are more versatile, wide-ranging tonally, etc., than just about anything out there, at any price. Sometimes, having a dedicated genius spend a lifetime of experience developing a basic unit results in a really, really, really good, repeatable result.
