I have wondered how the rosette "functions" and have considered the possibility of it stiffening the area around the sound hole, but I've not nearly enough real experience to formulate any ideas about it yet. That said what Bruce brings up makes sense.

Someone clarify for me please: what is a continuous rosette? Is that simply a rosette cut out of a solid part of wood instead of parts glued together in segments?

No, just one that does not have a gap that gets covered up by the fretboard.

It's perfectly okay to have a gap under the fretboard. The fretboad covers and reinforces that area. I do not think that anyone meant not having that gap when they said "continuous rosette." They meant not segmented like this:

I think the main functional purpose of the rosette is to be a crack preventer and stopper, since any unsupported endgrain (sealed or not) is a place where a crack can start and then propagate.
