Default New Kamaka tenor arrived!

Well, I took the plunge and ordered a new Kamaka HF-3 (koa). It just arrived at the dealer today, and I'll be flying there in 2 weeks to pick it up while on business. Couldn't resist posting a few pics here.

Tone is more important of course, but I'm thinking this is one lovely looking uke! Is this a typical look or is this one something special (or a dud vs typical)? Would love any comments on this one's looks from Kamaka owners (or fans). Also, I thought the HF-3 had a rosewood fingerboard - yet this one looks distinctly ebony-like. Did they change materials in recent batches?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

I have a Kamaka Tenor that I bought on Kawaii in 2005. It is the best sounding uke I have ever played. I would not put any stock into the appearance of the wood correlating to tone. But if it does, you have a sure fire winner. That is a beauty! Mine is not nearly as figured. If you love to play ukulele, you will be pleased!

Wouldn't shipping be safer than taking the chance on a flight crew not letting you take it on board? They can be unpredictable. Gorgeous instrument by the way. Just seeing that logo makes me smile.

...the figure on that Kamaka is a bit showier than the Koa on my 2008 concert model...it also has an unstained neck which is different....i love my Kamaka and plan on getting a tenor at some point....

Thanks for the kind comments. I learned that this one does indeed have a rosewood fingerboard, must just be a bit darker than others I've seen photos of.

Heading out to pick up this guitar on Wednesday - will report by the weekend on whether the sound is as good as I hope it is! Appreciate the supportive comments.

I have a Kamaka Tenor that is a few years old, but mine does not have as nice a wood grain as the one in the picture. Don't get me wrong, mine is a beautiful instrument, but the vertical lines on that one give it a special quality. Kamaka may seem like an expensive choice, but when you compare it to the Collings and Compass rose prices it's actually a good deal. Kamaka is the real deal. Enjoy.

Default Kamaka

One beautiful uke, brah!
As both a Hawaiian native and a professional uke player, 'you get one ono kine uke'! haha
Kamakas are as awesome as they are legendary.
Of course, each has its own tone.
Don't know what strings they currently use, but would recommend Aquila.
Congrats!

Well, the uke came home and landed under my Christmas tree. Couldn't be more pleased!! A few photos from under the tree are below. Delighted with the tone, and loving the start of my journey learning the uke!

Really appreciate all the kind comments - gave me confidence that this one was worth flying to Atlanta to get. Thanks to Maple Street Guitars (my "home away from home" instrument dealer) for being kind enough to pick the best looking one from their Kamaka shipment for me. Pays to be loyal to your dealer - the partnership can make wonderful things happen.

Happy New Year to all!
