This might not qualify as a "music book", but Alan Doyle's book "Where I Belong" is the story of of growing up in Newfoundland and Alan's rise in the music industry. Alan is the lead singer of "Great Big Sea". This is a funny and easy read that gives a genuine insight into growing up on the rock.

Kalamazoo Gals by John Thomas for me... A really enjoyable read, with a great mix of history, the human spirit, and guitar construction/technology.

I read your book this year as well, while I was on vacation. I didn't have a guitar to play for a full 10 days so your book acted as a surrogate until I got home again. It must've been quite a journey doing all the field work you did up there in Michigan. Thanks for everything.

I agree. I really liked it and my wife did too. I never thought she'd read a "guitar book".

This year I read John Fahey's, Neil Young's new car-oriented, and Joe Perry's biographies/autobiographies. All were good with Neil Young's writing being the most engaging.
I can't recall if I read it this year or last, but Rod Stewart's autobiography is a total hoot - great read.

Grace like a River, by Christopher Parkening. Unreal book about the pressure of Concert classical guitar, and a cool story about the man's renewed perseverance after experiencing a giant let down in the realization of his dream. Can't recommend this book highly enough for any guitar nerd.

+1 on Richard Saslow's New Art of Ragtime Guitar, for all the reasons given.
Incidentally, Saslow has another book coming out in early 2015. I plan on getting it, hope it's as good as his first. |
