American Pie - Don McLean
Freight Train Blues - Trad
Honey Just Allow me one more chance (From Freewheeling Bob Dylan)
You don't know what it's like - Bee Gees!
Don't think twice it's alright - Bob Dylan
Catch the Wind - Donovan
Promised Land - Chuck Berry
Tangled up in Blue - Bob Dylan
Jesse James - Billy Gashade
Me and Julio - Paul Simon

I use harmonica a lot so that helps my voice. Singing for a couple of hours without microphone makes it a bit croaky. No licences needed in the towns I visit. Best wishes all.
If you are busking you really need to sing songs that people are familiar with and recognize easily, so this is a good list, a good mix.

Relief to see something a bit more contemporay. Looking at the previous suggetions youd think the audienes were folks only in their 60's ..

Ha well from what I've gathered from this forum is that most people here are 30+ . Being 19 myself I find some things on here hard (songs, genres, never heard of half of them before I came here) to relate to but it's still a much better community than any other guitar forum i've found so far.

Ha! -being an old fart myself, that's the idea I got reading through this thread, that most of the suggested song-material was pretty ancient! But, getting back to the whole concept of busking: it takes guts, to stand on a street/subway/shopping mall, and play an instrument, or sing, (or both) while the general public rush by you,-totally disinterested in what your playing, and in some cases, having to put up with verbal abuse, I couldn't do it, so, respect to
all those buskers out there who do!

I try to mix things up. Throwing in a few "sing-a-longs" can help draw a crowd in. I'm also partial to any song on the Beatles - Rubber Soul (US) album.

Hey Jude - The Beatles
Collide - Howie Day
Slide - Goo Goo Dolls
Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
Lightning Crashes - Live
Nore Than Words - Extreme
Scarborough Fair - Simon & Garfunkel
Wonderwall - Oasis
You Got It - Roy Orbison
Under The Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers
I'm A Believer - Monkees
Sundown - Gordon Lightfoot
Blister In The Sun - Violent Femmes
Losing My Religion - REM
Jumper - Third Eye Blind
Breakfast At Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something

A guitarist is playing music you don't like and singing badly in a public place in hopes that you will feel sorry for him or her and put money in a jar.

Busking is the same as "begging" but only louder and sometimes, more desperate. Sad really when you think about it.

I rather see it as the most honest type of gig. Adding to the atmosphere of the street and getting paid in direct response to your performance. I've seen some amazing buskers thru the years.
