+1 for this. Also a fan of the OM-21 if you want to spend a little more.

I think you know what i mean... ;-) best US made Martin for the least amount of $$$... great suggestions so far... thanks!

Seems the DSR is discontinued... The MMV looks really cool but they list for $X,XXX at GC... The D15 and 00015 are on 'clearance' at GC for $XXX and something called a Custom D is also on clearance for $XXXX...

Does the Mahogany of the 15 series make them sound really warm? I gues I also have to decide between a D and 000...

Is there anything besides the gloss top and solid neck that would be a reason to choose the 16 over a 1 series?

Look at the Martin website. Find guitars that suite your taste. Figure you can find new (with warrantee) pricing at about 40 percent off the retail price (i.e., multiply the list price by 0.6). Figure you can get used (clean, shiney, etc.) pricing at about 50 percent off.

See if your local stores have any, now that you've done your homewook.

If I were in your shoes, I'd stive for something in the "Vintage Series" that has a body size that you like. I'd be looking at the OM body size as they are well balanced, good for both strumming and fingerpicking and very sofa friendly.

D-16GT. Solid south American mahogany back and sides (at least they weren't using sapele when I got mine) and single piece Spanish cedar neck with mortise/tenon neck joint. My only gripe is the micarta bridge, fretboard and black plastic binding which I personally find artificial in feel and aesthetic - especially the bridge which I continually rub my picking hand raw upon. I'd much rather they used rosewood as they do with the 15 series.

I'll concur that the MMV is great as well, though it's slightly more expensive and tonally different due to the 15 series bracing and rosewood back & sides.

Not sure which one would be best for flatpicking and strumming at home and on the couch ;-)... any recs?

They all seem to be in the same price range... Would be cool to have a built in tuner and pu... DO the OM's have a composite neck?

A used OM-21 (in very good condition) is what I went with when I sought to answer this question for myself. I bought it almost a year and a half ago and haven't considered replacing it.

+1....I am loving My D-1

I have a couple month old OMC1E that I am about to put on the selling blocks. Great sounding and playing guitar, am selling it because I am a more of a flatpicking dread guy. If you or anyones interested it can be yours for less than the cost of an OM X series.

Least expensive I have seen is 000x1. I have tried them at 3 different places and it sounds better than other Guitars I try. I know bottom of the barrell for many but would be a dream come true on this end.

Default Hi...

Davidos and welcome to the forum!

Recent, recent convert to Martin and love the OOO/OM style guitars they make.

But I haven't seen anyone ask - what body style do you prefer? And what kind of music do you enjoy playing? These would be questions that could help you define your choices a bit.

I just recently committed to a 15 series purchase and am looking forward to learning more about Martin and my experience with them.

Love the Martin 000-18ge but it is well beyond my means at this time.

As far as affordable Martins go - 15 series, 16 series and sustainable wood models would be my choices based on very limited experience.

It will be nice to see what you choose to go with.

Thanks for all the advice and the welcomes!

I decided to go with the 000-15M. I got a good price from Maury's Music and hopefully should have it in a few weeks! Seemed like a good compromise between an 00 and a D and a lot of bang for the buck... I'd like to learn more fingerpicking but also be able to strum some folk/rock tunes, etc.

A friend suggested a K&K Pure Mini pickup but I don't want to drill anything...

Also, What strings can you guys/gals suggest?!
