"Secret Agent Man"--Among My Top 10 Favorite 60s US Billboard Top 40 Guitar Solos
Oh yes, indeed.
It's true. Johnny Rivers explodes with a tremendous electric guitar solo on his 1966 solid gold smash, "Secret Agent Man." It's long been among my top 10 favorite guitar solos in a US Billboard Top 40 song from the 1960s. Here's Johnny Rivers playing "Secret Agent Man" live on a segment of "The Hollywood Palace" (he's introduced by Judy Garland), originally telecast in the US on May 7, 1966. The solo actually sounds better than the studio version, in my opinion.

Thanks for the video. This was the first solo I tried to learn many years ago. Probably seems like a lame song to the young folks now, but this was pretty hot stuff back then.

Now I'm trying to learn that solo. That's one of those songs I've always loved, but never think of when picking new material.
My other favorite of his is Memphis. I recognize the scale of the opening riff, but am having trouble nailing down what sounds like a double stop for the harmony in that riff. That looks like maybe a Deluxe or Princeton Reverb, and a Super Reverb they're plugged into. Nice amps!

I agree with you all it is a great song.
Also KUDOS to the highly inventive, concise and energetic solo. The on the beat first bars then that behind the behind the beat ascending line hits the nervous system just right. Then he changes the solo to a vocal type (harmony) melody on the 12th and 14th fret. Afterwards goes back to the original song (solo) melody with a salutatory hook lick on the out. This is equal to any Wrecking Crew solo, IMHO. One of the few I learned when the internet came around and I was in classic rock bands. Gosh if we only had the requisite singing(and background vocals) back then. There is a ton of fun pop/rock songs that were very fun. Lies Knickerbockers Liar Liar The Castaways Little Girl Syndicate of Sound Friday on My Mind The Easy Beats etc....
