Build Thread: Crosby Dreadnought.
I commissioned a guitar from Crosby Guitars last year, its starting to come together.
I actually had a chance to stop by Russel's workshop over the holidays when I was out East. I was able to try out a few guitars he had on hand, upside down, but still got a good feel for them. Also got to see my the various parts of my guitar, and some other stuff he was working on. He started putting up pictures so I thought I'd share some of them. The whole album can be found on the Crosby Guitars facebook page. Specs: Lefty 14 Fret Dreadnought Sitka Spruce top Cocobolo Back Black Walnut neck Curly Maple binding Spalted maple rosette. Fan Fret 25-26 (7th fret parallel) 1 3/4 nut Wedge Body Sound Port Maple Leaf Inlays So my backwards, crooked, and slanted guitar. Hoping to see some neck pictures soon. The walnut looked nice. |

Congrats on the build from a fellow lefty!
I've been yearning for a fan fret- but no one has righty guitars let alone lefty! I'd love to try yours out! |

Crosby
Hello Zenith
You will love your Crosby D. I have a Crosby Slope D and it is one of the nicest guitar I have ever owned and just to show you what I am comparing it to I have listed my past guitars below. It has a rich crystal clear bass, sparkling treble and well defined mids. Russell is a very modest guitar builder and does not promote his work as I ( and many others ) think he should. After owning my Crosby for three years I am still amazed at how it sounds and how it continues to mature. I will be watching your build with interest. daniel Petos - Baranik - Hoffman - Goodall - de Jonge - Martin - Webber |

I'm looking forward to trying it out. It will be my first fan fret, and wedge. First custom build as well. I agree you don't get a chance to try out a lot of less common features when you are left handed. I figured I'd take the plunge and hope for the best.
Russel did seem hesitant about an online presence. Then again I'm not big on it either. In any case, I can share my guitar, and maybe get him a bit of exposure. Hopefully by the time its done it warms up a bit. Don't think I'd want it shipping in -32C -Will For a better idea on how it will look with the fan. It was a strange experience to go to his place and see the layout for my guitar pinned up on the wall. Last edited by zenith; 01-22-2014 at 10:08 PM. |

Congrats on the build! Russel built me 2 guitars last year. It's great to visit his workshop and talk to him. When are you expecting it? Another month or so?

I'd say probably another month or so. Still have to work out the final details on the inlays, but should progress smoothly. Not too antsy yet.
It was nice to visit. It was the day I was traveling back home so it ended up being 19 hours of travel, but worth it. Probably been a couple decades since I was on that side of Nova Scotia. |

Russel lives in a beautiful area of Nova Scotia. Were you in NS and decided to stop in to visit Russel or did you go just for the guitar?
I'll be following the build thread on Russel's webpage: http://www.crosbyguitars.com/ |

I was already in Nova Scotia visiting family, over in Antigonish. I figured a 4 hour detour was the closest I was ever going to be so I took advantage of it.

A fan fret dread...how cool! Gotta love cocobolo reds and oranges.
Is the walnut neck going to be figured or straight grain?

I only saw the neck briefly. I think it was more straight grain but I could be mistaken. Hopefully in another week or two some neck pictures will be up. It looked nice. I think it will go well with the cocobolo colours.

Good to see Russel getting some attention around here...he makes nice guitars, though I may be considered somewhat biased since I have three of his instruments (including both his first soundport ('10 FS Elite) and his first multi-scale ('12 Jumbo Elite baritone). You're in for a real treat...

Getting closer.
Several more pictures went up so here's some of them. Some shots of the neck, headstock, and the bound body.
It looked like the wedge was backwards before I realized the guitar was lying face down. Had me worried for a second. Last edited by zenith; 01-26-2014 at 09:06 PM. |

Zenith, keep the build pics coming. Cosmetically, one of the nicest parts of Russel's guitars is the rosette. Just amazing work.
I like the headstock overlay, especially that black streak. Makes it unique. |

I think we will have to give Russell the top award for worst kept work shop.

Yeah, I've been looking at the headstock. I'm liking it. Adds to the asymmetry of the whole deal. Its really starting to come together nicely.
The rosette looks nice too. I suppose his regular abalone/cocobolo rosette would have been more fitting, but I'm just not a fan of abalone. I do like the maple though. Curious to see how it will all look once it's finished. |
