Nice to have same idea
Koa binding over ABW that's the way I was looking for initially, but I didn't realize it would be so gorgeous until I saw your pic LOL

Excuse the detour (I refuse to call it a hijack, since the young woman is in half the photos anyway!)...

What wood combinations is Adrianne working with this second time around (that is, when she's not sitting back in a chair, feet propped up, watching the old man slave away )?

Looks like yet another beautiful guitar from the McKnights -- and that this new rosette pattern that I and others have requested (and I wasn't the first) is becoming a McKnight standard. Very cool.

I'll hope on with another ABW bound in koa. It'd be fun to get these all together and compare. Here's my Burner.

This is going to be a sweet looking guitar, Congrats!
I do have a question for Tim, What kind of glue did you use for the double sides? I have seen you use the epoxy before, this is different.

Glue is applied on both inner and outer side.

Hi Dennis and thanks for the kind words.

I am using a product that Tom Doerr turned me onto called Unibond 800, a urea glue especially made for the laminating process. They sell an optional "blocker" to mix in that will prevent the adhesive from being forced through the wood during the laminating process. Another plus is that it dries rock hard. After I exhausted my supply of TAP epoxy I switched to this product. Its much easier to sand off afterwards too. The downside is a short 6-month-ish shelf life so purchase it in smaller quantities. It can also be stained easily with powdered stain as seen on the other side that I am gluing. I plan to cut a side port in the other side and did not want a light tan glue line showing so I stained the adhesive black.

Tim,
You probably know, but keeping that urea product cold should extend it's shelf life

Thanks Tim for explaining that. Did you use the blocker as well?

Tim I remember watching David J Marks use the urea formaldehyde glue on the show WoodWorks. Would this be a glue that could be used for the general guitar construction? Here is a great article David wrote on the subject of urea formaldehyde glue and its uses. http://www.djmarks.com/pdf/ureaglue.pdf It looks like it is very toxic to use.

Yes, I did and it works quite well. Just don't use too much (ie follow the directions).

Yes, mine lives in the frig while not in use. Thanks for sharing the tip Doug.

Do we get a discount if Adrianne builds our guitar, or does that command a premium?

I saw Adrianne's first guitar at the Healdsburg in August, and all I can say is, you'd better sock away some extra cash... Clearly, the TALENT runs in the McKnight family.

Adrianne is working with a beautiful and unique set of Birdseye African Movingui with a master grade Lutz top. Its got some serious mojo already and we have high expectations for her #2. It should be under finish sometime this week.

Thank you, but we also have the same talent to make as many mistakes as the average bear!

David, Adrianne just said hers comes at a premium for non-custom orders.

Eire, your youngest McKnight sister might actually have to speak up at the 2014 McJam to talk about her builds!

Ok... Back to Yin's thread. Pictures coming again tomorrow.
