Well for me it's just to record the sound separately from the video and then combine them in post-production.

Better quality and not any more work than wiring external mics between small devices (which are not designed to be combined in such fashion and sometimes misbehave).

I will likely upgrade my DSLR this year to a model which shoots HD movies, and that will provide the video source…and the lowly H2 as a stand alone recorder really does a nice job on audio recording of my instruments.
