since the op has a pc, then logic and digital performer won't work since they are mac only.

i use logic and love it but i also have protools le that i use more for editing purposes.

i also use ableton live and find it a blast to use. it can do pretty much what any of the others do, to a point, and, some things that the others cannot do.
have fun!

I use Magix Samplitude Music Studio 16. Not very expensive and pretty much enough for me. Also easy to use, which is nice when you are just more or less making simple acoustic songs without a lot of instruments.

I use Reaper for everyday recording and Adobe Audition for serious audio editing. I am anxiously awaiting the release of AA 4.0....

I've been using PTLE for about 10 years. It works fine for my uses.

Arghh! The Cubase DAW CD has more value as a coaster or disk in a game of torture frisbee. IOW, Cubase products ain't worth a hill of beans.

I am going to try the Reaper route.

JHMO tho ...

Reaper for general recording, Ableton Live for composing, experimenting, and having fun. I just bought the Intro version and working my way through it. Its great software, and generally easy to use. If it had more regular DAW features like takes, comping, etc it would be my only DAW.

I started with Sonar LE that came with my audio interface. Very easy to use. I got started quickly with it. I have since upgraded to their Home Studio Version. Right around $100 I think and it does way more than I am capable of taking advantage of. Like others have said, try out some free trial versions and see what you think.
