My sig refers to SOUND, maybe you missed that. But you have sure reinforced it. I didn't "shoot you down", I expressed MY opinion, which happened to be contrary to yours.

I will suggest the Gretch Junior Jet. With a good setup, it plays great with pretty decent tone. I like it with a set of flat-wounds. I don't own one, but did perform a setup on one last year. You can pick one up new for around $250. In my opinion, it may be your best bang for buck instrument. Plus, it looks pretty cool, so a teenager may dig it.
Another option could be a viola bass from Epiphone or Jay Turser.
