Default Which mics to use for a duel mic setup in studio?

As some of you know I'm going to be testing an opening up process in studio.

I did this a few years ago before I perfected my methods and this was the result https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrkgenEKFYc

I'd like to do a better job this second time around as I think I have something more substantial to show off.

I'm thinking a duel mic setup because everyone involved said the guitar sounded much fuller in the room after the treatment however it didn't come across on the mic setup which was a single mic. My process still produces this room filling sound I'm looking to capture. So I'm thinking a duel mic setup this time around. Any suggestions for a duel mic setup that studios would have on hand? I live in Austin, TX btw.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

FYI this is the guitar I intend on using this time
http://maurysmusic.com/inc/sdetail/b...a/52963/100179

I'm thinking to use one of my treated guitars in the studio to set up a configuration that will capture the fullness of sound. Then use that setup for the guitar testing.

Any other suggestions for how to do this recording would be welcome. Dream mics, etc... I can call around to make sure the studio has these mics before I choose one. It also should ideally be a setup that could be easily replicated when I revisit the studio after 2 weeks.

Lots of mikes. Just get advise from studio people.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you go to a decent studio the engineer will know what mics to use and where to put them.

What's an opening up process? What are you opening?

I watched the video. The main problem with it is that you could easily have played differently on the two takes; a little harder or softer. That would account for the difference I heard. Different pick would also change the timbre.

Are you trying to show off the guitar or the room? If the room, then use more mics, but be prepared to deal with phasing issues.

What mics? a pair of Schoeps CMC641. Rent them, don't try to cough up the money to buy.

Regards,

Ty Ford

Opening up the guitar, like using a tonerite but magnified many times over. I'm trying to show off the guitar. The difference wasn't too discernible through the previous setup that's why I'm trying to elicit a better setup (in addition the difference wasn't too discernible because the process was in its early stages and I've improved upon it significantly). I'd like to get it where the differences of playing harder or softer wouldn't account for the differences heard (other than using some kind of mechanical setup which I'm ruling out at this phase of testing). I think a stereo setup will work better from my experiences of doing this the first time around (people heard significant differences of how the guitar sounded in the room that didn't come across using the single mic). Thanks for the advice on the mic, I'll rent a pair of those to use. I think more than 2 mics would be problematic. Should I use a preamp with these or just take a dry signal? Any suggestions on avoiding phase issues? I'm thinking if the studio can mark where the chair and mic stands go and we measure the differences and angles of the mics to replicate resetting up the whole configuration during the second take which would be about 2 weeks after the first take.

Tried looking up places to rent a schoeps cmc 641 not coming up with anything. Any other mics that would be really close or suggestions?

FYI I'm in the austin texas area.

PS - I think dreamguitars use to use a pair of ADK A6s, I looked up the price on those and maybe I could just buy a pair to use.

I don't think video's that impressive either, that's why I'm looking to do over. Better equipment, setup and a superior process this time.

A matched pair of Neumann KM 184's is probably one set of mics you would find in a studio. Do you intend to purchase a set of "studio mics"?

If it's not too expensive, i.e. not more than 500-600 dollars and it makes sense.

I'm hearing really good things about the CAD M179.
Around $129.

It will be my next mic. Can't go wrong at that price.
Read some reviews of it.
