Varnish and Laquer Kays
Got a couple Kays' I've been re-working recently. One just has finish checking that's out of this world ( I'm thinking laquer). The other is just as checked but less noticeable (I'm thinking varnish) . So it's likely the laquer (if so) is newer ? Here's a look see vid :

All lacquer in the 1960's. Very few factory guitars had varnish after the 1920's.
