Default How do you install equipment on your computer with no cd drive?

How do you install equipment like audio interfaces and software if you don't have a cd drive on your computer?

  1. The software is often available as a download.
  2. If you have another computer with a CD/DVD drive, you can copy the CD/DVD contents onto a USB stick or USB hard drive, or use your local network.
  3. You can buy an inexpensive USB DVD drive.

Most software these days is installed by downloading a disk image (or equivalent) from the web. No CD required.

If you must install software from a CD, and your computer doesn't have one, and there is no alternative (e.g., like mentioned above), then you would need to purchase a CD/DVD drive peripheral device. They're cheap.

Default No CD Drive

I have a similar situation. I don't know if you're using a Mac or PC. If the former, this might help.

I purchased Logic Studio 9 in CD-Rom form some years ago for my MacBook Pro. I now want to install in on the Mac Desktop I just purchased, which does not have a drive. Here's a link to a video that explains how to do it using the drive from the notebook computer.

I did that remote installation last week, using an installation disk and the CD drive in my iMac to install a program onto a MacAir that had no CD drive. It was actually pretty simple, and I impressed myself by doing it--I am easily impressed! You could do it with anyone's computer, I think, but you would want to make sure to turn back off all the sharing permissions between the computers when you were finished.

Hi mvw...

My wife's laptop had no drive, so I bought a USB one from New Egg for $29 (DVDr, CDr, for reading and burning CD and DVD).

Works just fine. Takes two USB ports (to generate enough power to run the player). It also plays DVDs etc.

Of those 3 choices, I choose an external USB/DVD drive.
Although, I've downloaded and loaded from USB as well.

But an external DVD drive adds another arm to your computer.
It comes in handy with software and it's great to watch movies on.

I own a Windows tablet. I also own an iPad. I watch movies on the Windows
tablet, with an external CD drive. They're cheap too.
