Default Guitar and vocals - SDC +dynamic

Several years ago a friend of mine did a recording with me with a Shure 565 SD on vocal.
I really liked the (lo-fi?)result, suited my voice well.
Sounded like a SM58 but warmer, with a slight dip in the mids.
After having tried several sub 500 $ ldc:s without really liking any of them,
I noticed that this predecessor to the SM58 is still around - so I bought it.
I really like it, although it doesn’t sound as good as my friends 565…
But his old school analog mixer with nice preamps could have something to do with it…
You hear my Shure 565sd in the second soundcloud thread below.
(with two sE 7 on a Martin 00-15m)

Sounds great to my ears - no complaints !

From time time I have to mix tracks in my studio recorded with a SM58 on vocals, which has been recorded at home and then sent to me. They always need some heavy tweaking to get a good sound. So I'm curious about EQing on your vocal track - sounds decent !

Thanks, glad to hear it!
Actually there is very little eq-ing done.
Som subtraction done at 200 Hz and a thad of lifting in the higher mids.
I have recorded for many years but it’s not until recently I’ve started
to teach myself the outcome of different microphones.
I must admit I still often prefer the large condensers.
I have a pretty nice Röde NT2A and a Milab VIP-50.
But they sometimes sound to ”good” / detailed for me, go figure….

Dyna,

I like it, the tonality works fine with the sparse presentation. Nothing wrong with lo fi, and there are a lot of folks who would agree.

Another thing to factor in when you choose mics and/or EQ is your age and how it has effected your hearing. There are age-related hearing issues like tinnitus and hyperacousis that can factor into what we find pleasing as we get older. We just need to be aware of who the intended audience is.

True that!
I'm 63 and I might have gotten more sensitive to shrill sounds...

Great tune and lovely recording!

I'm a big fan of dynamic mics on vocals. M88 and M69 are my personal two favorites.

A couple of advantages I can think of:
-A singer can more often work a dynamic and make use of the proximity effect
-Much less sensitive to transient sounds (less de-essing required, less strange mouth noises)
-Closer typical working distances means we are picking up list of the room which is a very good thing for most home studios.

I pretty much use an SDC on acoustic and dynamic on vocal all the time, because that's all I have set up. The SM58 is a good mic for my vocals I've decided, though I did have a really nice tube mic for a while that worked well - just couldn't get used to the bit of unwieldiness of having it set up in my really small space.

I've read somewhere that the current 565 is not the same mic, and more of a "look-alike" for folks looking for that. Still, a good friend used one of those on stage quite a bit and it worked well for him.

Nice recording, whatever you used!

Yeah, my all new 565 doesn’t sound exactly like my friends old one.
But close enough. It suits my voice a little better than a sm58.
It’s all about the right combination I guess.

Good points about the relative advantages of dynamics, thanks!
