This is why I use the self-service check out.

(your area code) 867-5309

Instead of saying "nine" the normal way, be sure to pronounce it "nye-e-eye-e-eyne".

An if you play air guitar or start doing Marvelettes dance steps, you will really get the deer in the headlights

Great song - I hope Tommy Tutone (performer), Alex Call and Jim Keller (writers), have made bucketloads from it!

I'll happily use the self-check stations if they offer some incentive, e.g. 2% or 3% off of my bill, but I'm not doing their work for them for nothing!

I agree exactly!

My wife almost refuses to use self checkout out of principle. She's right, but I use it just to get the heck out of the store faster.

Interesting I often prefer not to deal with people if I don't have to, and if serves my preference , my convenience and is often faster ....it ain't fer nuttin'.... not to mention being pretty much 1st, world trivial

Last time I was in in Lowes and they asked, I spotted the store's number on the inside of the door and recited that back to the sales clerk, who punched it into the system without recognizing it. Let them telemarket themselves.....

I have a couple of retailer loyalty cards where I have given my address as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC. When they ask for a phone number, I give the switchboard number for the US Congress. It helps to have a near photographic memory for numbers.

A small one.

I'm running around town doing errand stuff, and this was just one of many.

So I finally get to the cashier and she asked if I had a Lowes card so they could track my purchases. I said no.

The total was like a dollar something, I'm holding a $5 in my hand.

Then she wanted my phone #...............

I said, "You don't need my phone # for cash."

She was almost insulted, and got sorta mad at me. The guy behind me was quite puzzled as well.

I realize she was just doing what she was told, but efficiency is being ruined due to this constant data collection that is worthless. I totally get SOME products "flagging" sales due to bomb making material, or meth head stuff, but Holy Cow Batman........
+1

I also find it very annoying.
IIRC long ago Radio Shack was the first to ask for zip code and phone number to make a cash purpose.
I always refused and if they did not politely proceed with the sale I'd make an ugly scene.

We aren't people anymore.
We are marketing opportunities.

I find it astonishing that most people, especially the young, have given up on caring about privacy.

I won't even join facebook.
I want to take some training videos on lynda dot com but LinkedIn bought them so I have to join LinkedIn and give all my personal info to them in order to take get Lynda videos ... but Microsoft bought LinkedIn.
No way am I submitting to Microsoft.
I give up.
I guess I'll just not get that training.

I view self service registers as a mechanism for not raising my price on the items I'm buying.

I'd much prefer packing my own stuff and being assured the eggs are not sitting atop the sliced cheese, and other bagging niceties.

But even more I prefer self-serve checkouts because it makes my inner efficiency expert go batty
> watching clerks handle every item two or three times when once or twice would do,
> listening to the clerks who talk to their co-workers without realizing how it slows down their performance while I watch and listen to their chit chat, and
> waiting for them to relinquish their hold on my change while they peruse the register receipt for Valuable Information they Must Tell Me before I escape.

Not at all

Self check-out line is usually shorter or has no one in line, four positions available. My time is worth the savings to me. Do you pump your own gas? Outside in the cold? snow, freeing rain? The inside self checkout at Lowes or HD is nothing compared to standing outside in subfreezing temps pumping gas.

Life is too short to stand in line behind someone who can not swipe the card correctly, push in the chip reading cards all the way, or have some other human to human interaction slow down the checkout line. I'll take my personal time savings and go on my way.

Cash or credit ... "all you need is your money, and let me get outta here, thanks". Yeah some cashiers seem confused, some even offended ... do I care?
