DT770's . . . 32 OHM or 250 OHM?
Want to use the DT770's for beginning recording and mixing of acoustic guitar and maybe some vocals, but mainly stereo guitar tracks.
32 OHMS reported to have heavy base boost and 250 OHMS higher trebles, but better overall sound representation. Thoughts? |

FYI - 770s also have an 80 ohm option. That might be a nice compromise for you.

That should have plenty of juice for the 80 ohm set.

I've had a 250Ω set for 6 years or so. The coiled cable broke at the headphone but I had it replaced with a straight cable reasonably by their service "department" (some guy in his garage, I suspect).
I was able to drive those with an old Firewire Focusrite Saffire Pro, but I'm not recording a Marshall stack, either. Lower impedance models should be no problem. (I use a headphone amp now.) I still love these for tracking and even just listening. They have large, pretty well sealed pads and are very comfortable and sound good. I don't think they're ideal for mixing though - they can make things sound "too good" and the isolation may work against some mix decisions. I prefer monitors or my open back Sennheisers (the latter if I'm tinkering later at night). If you are going to track and mix, I'd probably get 2 different sets, if you are restricted to headphones. And you can probably get 2 adequate sets (i.e., for not much more than one set of DT770s) that will give you a couple things to check translation on, i.e., besides your best earbuds. My $.02.

I purchased a DT770 80 ohm after reading extensively online. With iphone Xr I need the volume all the way up but has plenty of room plugged into an Audiobox USB96. There is a lot of conflicting information out there, thought I might add some clarity. Sound great btw.

I have the 250's but I also have the gain from my Carbon interface. and even my M1 Macbook Pro drives them pretty well. But for the Scarlet I would go with the 80 ohm

I use the DT770 80 ohm with my 2i2. Works fine. I got them for tracking; I find them more comfortable and clear-sounding than my Sennheiser HD280s. Plus, the DT770 80 ohm has a straight cable, 'cause I despise heavy coiled cables.

I have the 80 ohm version, chosen because they are stated to work with everything. From my research there's not enough of a sound difference that most humans can detect.

You might want to pick up the anniversary DT-770 Pro X Limited Edition headphones in a few weeks when they hit the stores. Looks like a nice value with the detachable/replaceable cable and upgraded speakers. 48 Ohms.

I have both the 250 ohm version and the 80ohm version. There’s not a huge difference between them, but the 250 ohm is definitely a bit smoother and more balanced. They do need a bit of gain though - I run mine from a Grace M900 headphone amp and I have it cranked normally to about 95% when I”m working on editing low level dialogue and such.
DT770 are my favorite tracking and editing headphones by the way. I would not use them to mix on through. -Mike
