'The Emperor' arrived today! Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II
Got my first hollow body today, an Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II brand new out the box. Beautiful playability & craftmanship throughout except for one thing- the nut looks rather cheap and chalky and was stuck on badly with one side slightly raised, surely this could be affecting the tuning (especially open D)
Not sure how to approach this, should I get a luthier to put on a nicer nut? or should I take it up with Epiphone for their shoddy workmanship?- the former obviously much less beuracratic . Advice would be appreciated, apart from that this is a lovely guitar with many gigs ahead

Doesn't look right to me. I would take it to a competent luthier and have it checked out/ possibly replaced. I never understand how stuff like this happens. Seems like the strings are too deep into their slots and what material is this nut made of to powder up like that.

I'd be more upset with whoever sold me that guitar as "new."
I've seen a ton of Epiphones. Almost everything about them is machine cut and "one size fits all." Human hands did that to the nut. Human hands with bad tools and poor know-how.I'd bet good money it didn't arrive from Epiphone that way.

Thanks for your thoughts on this folks , well i spoke to the shop I bought it from (a verified Epiphone dealer) and they say it must have come from the factory like that, so now I have written to Epiphone (below) , this guitar needs to be played ASAP so im going to take it to a good luthier to put on a quality nut in a proper manner then it should be in top form
To whom this may concern, Yesterday I bought an Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II brand new out the box from a verified Epiphone dealer Marshall Music in Durban, South Africa. The guitar has Beautiful playability & is made well except for one unfortunate thing- the nut looks as if it was put on very badly with one side slightly raised. It looks to me like the nut was put on by hand and with the wrong tools, it looks incredibly messy and the strings are actually digging into the chalky textured nut. In all honesty the nut looks as if it was made out of plaster of paris, this I suspect is also causing tuning problems. I'm quite shocked to see such bad workmanship with the placing & the material of the nut, it baffles me even more because the rest of the guitar is so beautifully crafted. Please advise me what to do about this, I really like this guitar and I intend to perform with it. The dealership I got it from said it came from the factory like that. Regards Wren Hinds

Dealer is full of it. That is NOT from the factory.
The Joe Pass Epiphones have tidy nuts. Call Gibson customer service..let them know the situation.. then send the photos. Dealer has pulled a fast one and I do not know why. Do they have another Joe Pass in stock.. go look at it.

A nut replacement, total check up of everything including the electronics and a quality set up with good flatwound strings and you should be fine. Trouble is, you will probably be out more than $100 for this work. Find a good luthier with experience working on guitars like this.

Please don't pay any money to get this nut fixed. That dealer owes you that at a bare minimum.
Actually, strike that. They owe you a new guitar and a very good reason not to report them to the BBB.
