But the egg shaker thing has got me thinking of a way to hold it while I play to add percussion on some songs.

go to about 3:15, and see one bad a guitar player use an egg shaker as a "pick"

I was at a Nashville NAMM show ten years ago w/ an amp builder buddy, set up next to us was a fellow who came up with a round pick. Had a big old display, two women dresses as car hops, etc. Spent a lot of $$s on his concept. I still have one around here someplace, no they don't work well.

Can't believe I found a photo,..

Am I dumb because I choose to use it, or claim to like it more than my other guitar accessories? Nope! I might be characterized as lazy, but I might also be someone with physical constraints for which a power tool is the better choice.

I've got pretty thick skin so I don't take it as a personal judgement on me, but, it's a pretty clear example to support my earlier suggestion a different title for the thread.

ok, i'll stop beating the dumb horse now.
thanks for listening.

Has anybody mentioned those "pick punch" things yet? Those are pretty dumb.

I can say that any I would list are probably used by many herein making them dumb or useless to only myself. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

For example, the shakers were not meant for use with guitar and are used by orchestras, major musicians and bands worldwide. I take mine with me on all international travels and sit in with bands from Cuba to Europe.

I like this. It doesn’t paint someone using some little-known product as dumb.

Probably take a bit of flak - but the rattlesnake rattle in the soundhole always struck me as a bit goofy.

Yeah, I know, tradition and all ...but, really?

I used a pick punch to destroy my credit card. One of the best things I ever did. Worked great! Still have a few lousy picks.

Didn't buy the punch, just showed my credit card full of holes to the sales person.

Yeah I don't think I'll ever be as good as Phil. LOL

He was basically hitting the strings with the egg, not strumming like the ad the OP posted suggested. I'm still gonna try it but I'm trying to think of an idea to secure it to my hand while playing with a regular flatpick.

Fire away!!
I don't like the feel of skin on a guitar. I'm not worried about the finish. And I don't want to wear log sleeve shirts in the summer. But my solution is to buy some funky looking socks and cut the toes out and wear one of those. Much cheaper and groovy looking.

Well, I AM a human being that produces copious quantities of perspiration, but I still think the sleeve is weird.

I am also a human that has a very sweaty guitar during my summertime gigs in 90 degree temps and 90% humidity.

Sometimes it is hard to see beyond our own situation. It is for me, anyway.

Yeah I agree it’s something that will work on certain situations, but the thing is marketed as a guitar learning tool, and IMO that couldn’t be further from the truth. It is if anything an instant gratification gadget.

Couple of points:

Guitar armrests are not meant to reduce sweat contact with guitar. That's a nice side-effect but not, at all, the reason for an armrest. The arm rest lifts your arm off the vibrating top so you aren't muting the guitar. Some guitars are more sensitive to this than others. On two of my acoustics it makes a *HUGE* difference.

Battery powered string winders aren't just for convenience or speed. By using a powered winder you have tremendous control over winding during installation, and consistent tension during the entire wrapping process, resulting in a more precise and secure fit and your strings "settling in" sooner/better.
