I once saw Chet Atkins peddling a guitar glove.
It was used on the fretting hand.
There was a pocket that had something to make the neck and frets easier to play.
Chet was an endorser for a while but I only saw him wearing it one time.

Looked a lot like a bowling glove.
Just found the show where he was using it.

Edward

I felt that the question itself is inanimate, so that the “dumb “ attaches to the person asking the question.

I guess my objection might be clarified somewhat in that context.

So what if you or I thinks a guitar accessory is “dumb”?

Maybe it isn’t dumb to someone else.

That’s all I was meaning with my earlier post.

Don't know if this would qualify as a dumb guitar accessory or how dumb it really is.

It's the whole guitar!

There are soooo many dumb options out there for the gullible and/or overly excited new player. The choices are almost limitless!

Don't be taken in by these things, do the work, practice, practice and more practice. That's the only way you're going to get where you never thought you could go!

I was thinking along similar lines. There is a lot of stuff out there that I regard a snake oil and/or gimmickry, it makes me wonder how smart us players are on average. The emperor's new clothes.

Late 70's. Fathead. It was a slab of brass shaped like a Fender or Gibson headstock. You stuck it on yer 'stock for violin like sustain. Oh brother. I think they tried again in the early 2000's.

I like the Chet Atkin glove idea, but for keeping the left hand warm while playing outdoors in cold weather. Don’t expect it would add would anything to your technique.

Now if it worked as advertised, we wouldn’t be calling the idea ‘dumb’ but ‘pure genius.’ And lots of us folks would keep that left handed glove handy in the guitar case. Silicone left hand finger guards might be just the solution for sore finger tips. But it sure looks dumb. Aimed at the beginner guitar player, you can pick them up for about $5 at Wallmart. Can only imagine that it would grossly interfere with articulation. Doc Watson didn’t use them. But maybe I should give them a try, and report back on AGF?

When I first watched the video of that glove, I also wondered if it helped with technique, for example, keeping thumb in the middle of the back of the neck. Then I noticed his thumb coming right around the neck. So much for that idea.

I like the finger condoms. Never know what you might catch from those strings right there.

Not a guitar accessory, but the dumbest music-related accessory I've ever seen was an audiophile (phool) gadget from the early 90s, in the heyday of the CD: it was a pistol-gripped spinning device that (magically, I suppose) made the digitally encoded information on the disc more sharply focused, with the result that the CD sounded "better" when inserted into the player.

I kid you not.

The headset mic accessory that came with my Barbie guitar.

It's too small to fit over my head.
It's almost as if it was made for a kid, or something.

Yeah, but it looks GOOD on you, Tico. Everybody says so!

Okay, sure, maybe the teeny headset mic squeezes your head so much it gives you migraines, but these are the sacrifices you need to make for your art!

In any event, you need to cowboy up (or maybe "Barbie up,") climb back up on that horse and return to ridin' the musical range there, podnar!

For most folks, I would agree. But I have recommended this dumb thing to two different people, with good results in each case. The first is a young lady who loves music, but because of her developmental disability, has relatively weak fine motor skills in her left hand. It allows her to enjoy playing some basic chords she could have otherwise. The second person is a man in his early thirties who was severely injured in an accident. This device is an amazing aid to his ongoing physical therapy.

Sometimes it is hard to see beyond our own situation. It is for me, anyway.
