Default Which backline/pa?

Hi all,

Just curious here as I ponder my acoustic rig....in search of opinions!

What would you rather use for gigging as a higher end option, and why:

1. A pedal preamp such as the Grace Design Felix, paired with an active PA wedge which could double as either backline/monitor or mini PA

2. A combo acoustic amp/pa such as the Mesa Rosette or Schertler Jam, etc

I went with the Rosette. Why ?? It has a really nice powerful EQ section and 300 watts.

I have both, a mini-PA with rack of components and a standalone acoustic amp. Both work well and either can be used in many situations, and one or the other is better in other situations.

Side by side, in a direct A-B comparison, the mini-PA far outshines the acoustic amp, and that is hardly surprising.

Of course you have to set up and tear down the P.A. at every gig vrs grab and go with the amp. Do you have a vehicle large enough to transport the P.A. ??

A mini-PA is only a bit more time to set up than an acoustic amp, and the sonic quality difference is quite noticeable. Single-source sound (e,.g, acoustic amps) for an acoustic loses something, imho. I run a small rack into a small mixer and to outboard powered speakers, and it sounds good and is easy to put together and take down.

So what's the total cost of the mini P.A. and the Felix ??

The Rosette costs $999.

Well...

The mini PA consists of the Felix, an Atomic CLR Neo ($1000), and a Yamaha mixer ($199)....total cost is $2200

The Rosette amp is less than half.....as is the Schertler Unico.

I could sing and guitar into either rig.

If you sing and play, I think a PA speaker is a better option. You can use a pedal like the Play Acoustic and get great vocals and guitar. If you only play guitar, a combo amp might be a little lighter and less to carry.

Plugged straight in, my acoustic sounds better through the Schertler than it does into a mixer and decent sound system. But the PA wins for overall flexibility and room sound reinforcement. A Schertler is a nice sounding rig and sounds good direct into PA too but the difference isn't gigantic. With a do over, I might skip the Schertler since these days I typically gig with PA anyway.

Yes... the PA style speaker system seems like it would be better for vocals. Also doesn't the PA system or speaker system project better than the amp ?

On the other hand, I'd think the hi-end amp like Schertler or Mesa Boogie would sound better for the guitars.

Depends on size and type of venue and style of play..
