For me, guitar has provided a wonderfully enjoyable hobby to fill my time. It’s improved my understanding of music- now when I hear a song, any song, I hear it differently than I used to before I started playing. I can “hear” all of its parts (different instruments, vocals) and maybe even recognize some of the notes! Also, it started music in my home which may have spilled over into my kids a little- one plays drums and piano, the other piano and guitar.

When I started playing I only ever wanted to play at home for myself. Somehow I’ve managed to find my way into two bands, which has opened up a world of friendships and experiences.

More than the Romans...

Actually, they did quite a lot but the guitar has still done more

I haven’t read through the entire thread. Playing the guitar for me has helped me keep from spending thousands on psychiatrists. The most meaningful moment with me and a guitar was when I had checked myself into rehab for subtance abuse problems in my early twenties. My dad showed up with my acoustic and said “I figured you could use this.” He knew. I have been clean and sober for over 30 years.

Playing the guitar has always been a release for me. I don’t have a care in the world while I am playing.

Been thinking about how to say it best:

That just about sums it up...

It a curse and a addiction that I can't shake. It's cost my more money than I don't care to imagine. It's gotten me into situations where I've made a fool of myself. I've dealt with people both crazy, good and bad because of it. I've had people steal wages and equipment from me. It also taught me that I could learn which helped me in my professional life along with teaching me to give business presentations that enabled me to have a good career. Least I forget relieve stress and given me years of enjoyment and intriguing mental challenges. And at times I received favorable attention from people including some pretty women.

The first thing I think of that playing the guitar did for me is that it enabled me to meet my wife.

The guitar has also opened up a whole world of music to me. The guitar has been my friend when I was really down. And music has sure helped me to meet a lot of great people over the years.

Guitar playing enriches me personally and spiritually.

It provides a creative outlet for sounds and melodies that seem to flow through me, from a greater source.

Guitar playing connects me with a spiritual and sonic richness and euphoria that I would otherwise be disconnected from.

It frees me, temporarily, from the binds of the daily human struggle... and enriches my soul.

Guitar playing is a vital part of my life.

(And my dogs seem to appreciate hearing it too!)

The acoustic guitar enabled me to become a singer and to be out front on stage. I was a drummer previously (and still am in my head).
