I play mine for a week or 10 days, let it acclimate to its new environment, then, regardless of how it feels to me I bring it to my tech to do a once over. If it needs nothing he just hands it back to me and says its good to go.

For acoustics I do. Why not get them playing the absolute best they can

Don't know if this has been discussed already but, all new purchased Martins get their first setups for free curdisy of Martin.

I let my new purchases get properly humidified after being in the typical dry stores or if it was shipped from a warehouse.

While that is happening, I make an appointment with my local luthier to do a proper set-up for me.

Well that does not help to much when the GC guy that learned how to tune an electric guitar last month want to setup your new acoustic.
