Default New build for a friends daughter

After finding out that I took up a new hobby of building acoustic guitars my friend asked if I would build one for his daughter for a Christmas present this year.
He built a new house a couple of years ago and had cut down a couple of Walnut trees and had them cut into lumber for some projects. He thought it would be cool to have a guitar built from the wood that came off the property. She even helped pick out the boards thinking it was for a different project so that he could surprise her.

Here is the board we picked for the back...

And the board picked out for the sides, She thought the sapwood looked cool..

The back joined and sides wetted looks good together

sides all ready to go ...

He wanted me to use as much of the walnut as I could for the build so I started on a walnut neck..

We decided on a Sitka top and Cocobolo trim, a simple coco rosette with w/b/b/w/ lines around it ...

top braced and ready to go on in the background..

More to come...

Travis, that is awesome on every level! How cool to get to do this for your friend?!! No doubt his daughter will cherish this special gift.

I am continually amazed by your builds! Beautiful work! You give me hope!

Continued....
I got the back and top glued on ....

Binding installed ..

cut a cool piece and joined it for the headstock ...

And after a bunch of sanding, pore filling, spraying and sanding again. I ended up with a guitar.

I am very happy with the way it turned out. It has a great voice that surprised me. It has that wonderful walnut tone to it but way closer to rosewood sound than I expected. I am excited to show it to my buddy and can't wait to see what his daughter thinks of it. The fact that the wood came from their homestead and that this guitar was built especially for her should make it a very special guitar.

Travis, that guitar looks phenomenal! You gotta tell us what she thinks of it!

My build is going SLOW. It's a really busy time for me right now, so not a lot of spare time. Need to get the sides bent next! Thanks for asking!

Again, well done man! It looks fantastic! I love the sapwood too!

Steve,
Thanks, I did do a little experimenting just before this build. I built my first fan fret, a Carpathian spruce over Rosewood with cutout, 13 fret 25-26" scale.
I will be building another soon, I really liked the way it sounds, very balanced. I didn't do a build thread on it but here are some pictures

Sorry for the bad cell phone pictures.

For now, a business to run, family, and 10 other hobbies I enjoy doing keep me pretty busy. Maybe in the future I will do custom build but for now I enjoy building strictly as a hobby. Thanks for asking.

Thank you Long Jon,
I have noticed my playing time has suffered some since I started building.

I hope so, I asked my buddy to record it when he gives it to her on Christmas so I can see her reaction. I am probably as excited as he is to give it to her.

Just got a text from my buddy and I will quote him here
"I don't think she would have been happier if I would have bought her a new
car. She has not put the guitar down all day. "

The picture of her with it and the smile on her face made my day.

Merry Christmas Everyone.
