Working on the alternate picking - inside picking & triplets (getting better, slowly)

I'm still at it!

A few tunes I want to learn rely on some fast-picked triplets over three strings. Often these start with a down stroke on a lower string, then up/down on the next two higher strings (like starting on the A, then D then G string). Then they loop back with an upstroke on the lowest string, then down/up to complete.

But there's a Carl Miner tune where the triplets start on a high string then descend. Originally I avoided this (cos I couldn't do it!) and went for up/up/down, up/up/down etc. But I find that to many upstrokes is bad for my wrist RSI! So I've gone back to try and relearn with the alternate picking:



This tune starts with fingers, but the bit that's relevant it from about 1m30s onwards.

As always, it's slow progress, and playing the alternate triplets slowly doesn't quite have the same mechanic as playing fast. But I'm pleased that I'm closer to nailing it that I was a couple years back!

Thanks! I have to say that the 'time to improvement' on these little mini-skills is loooong. The initial part of working out what the new mini-skill is (e.g. alternating descending 3-string triplets) isn't too bad. But then trying to optimize and speed it up takes a lot more time and effort.

That's an interesting tune - and sounds nice.

Inside alternate picking I find difficult, and I'm slower at it. I have a few exercises I use, and even though I pickup speed the more I play it, the inside-to-inside is always slower. I don't know why.

I'm going to try to play this. Do you have a link to Carl's video?

Really clean playing . well done.

I had to watch it closely ..."when / where did he get that pick?"

Then I saw it parked on the top. I usually camp it between my R&M fingers but it's hard to pick a spot to flip it around without stopping during a song.

I have been working on triplets in spanish style (always on steel) and my ring finger has the toughest time getting clean purchase. I have lost all sensitivity from years of concrete work/sanding. Pickers grip has helped a little, but it is really hard to get just the right feel where the note rings true and CLEAN without digging in and blowing the tempo/feel.

Watching your vid motivated me to try a little harder!

Because I'm playing the triplets with IMA fingers, I can't use any to grip the pick -- hence popping on the guitar's waist. If the fingerpicking part was really easy, just P/M, I might try palming the pick, but I'm not too worried about having the ability to put away/get out in the middle of a song!
