What Does It Take To Become A Guitar Virtuoso?
I always wonder, i've seen people play for 10, 20 years and they're just average, and others under 5 years and pretty amazing.
What does it take? is it hard work or they born a virtuoso, what is the true secret behind a guitar virtuoso? |

Talent AND lots of practice.
Skip on either one, and you'll never be Chet Atkins. |

A good ear for one...good hands for two....And a tremendous amount of time!
I would also say that one needs to hook up with the right teacher....There are some who are self-taught, but I think a player needs to learn how to practice....We tend to play the things that we already do well because it tickles our ears.... Now the disclaimer....I am NOT a guitar virtuoso! But, I do consider myself a good guitarist....There are many, many very talented players right here on this forum...It will be interesting to hear from them.... Boneyard |

I think it is a brain wiring thing. Some people are just born with the natural talent. But, it can never be realized unless they put the work in. The guys that you say are virtuosos in five years probably still put in a whole lot of practice.
The rest of us take longer and more practice. Playing guitar is just like golf, football, or anything else. The top 1.5% to 2% are the Tommy Emmanuel's and Payton Manning's whom are virtuosos, then 10% are professional level, and so on. There is a bell curve to everything. But the common factor to all of it is PRACTICE.

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." --Calvin Coolidge
