Default Martin HD28 value with repairs

I was thinking of checking out a 1993 Martin HD28 with extensive repairs. The neck was broken at the nut and professionally fixed. At the same time the soundboard sustaned 3 long cracks on the lower bout.It was fixed and cleated but refinished very poorly. From the picts it looks like there is a plenty of saddle left.I haven't checked it out yet.The owner states the damage does not affect the sound or playabilty. He is asking $800.What do you think is a fair price? I was thinking of offering around $600 if it looks solid and plays nice.

There was a post here recently where the OP just bought a HD-28V for $900 with a few issues like fitted 'barn-door' electronics.

I guess you really need to play it.

If it sings I think it's definitely worth 500-600

If it sounds good, plays good, and is stable, then $800 is about where it needs to be, and be fair to both parties. If I were selling it, I wouldn't take less than that. If I were buying it, I would only do so after I had the opportunity to take it to my personal tech/luthier and have it looked at, to make sure the repairs are stable.

It seems no matter how badly a guitar is trashed, the seller always says it doesn't affect the sound or playability.
Hard to fix a price without seeing and playing it, but from your description, I wouldn't go over $500 no matter how good the sound or playability was. But that's me.

I'm the one who bought the HD-28V.

If it was me, I would pass on that one. Sounds too rough for me. The headstock alone would make me pass.

And remember that if you ever go to sell it, I will be tough to move, even at a really low price. Future buyers will hav th same misgivings as you.
