Default Great TV shows that you were oblivious to at the time.

This thread is a shameless rip off of another current thread about great artists who escaped your attention when they were at their peak.

I'm not a big TV (or movie) guy, in fact I haven't watched any television series in a long time--probably since Seinfeld.

There was time when I enjoyed half hour sit coms. All in the Family, MASH, etc. Something the whole family could watch together without too much embarrassment.

Despite being a fan of the genre, there were a couple of shows that I really had no use for when they first came out, but later came to love when they were on re-runs. Barney Miller and Third Rock from the Sun.

I'd love to watch an occasional sit com, but have no idea what might appeal to me, I've been out of the TV game for so long. Do they even still make that kind of programming? My wife likes espionage and terrorism based shows, which I hate, so it would be nice to find something we could enjoy together.

Anyone else long for the days of TV gone by?

I discovered Breaking Bad a couple of years after it ended. I finally watched it and almost binge-watched all the way through all the seasons. Now I'm hooked on Better Call Saul ads a spinoff of Breaking Bad.

+1. I watched my first episode of Breaking Bad earlier this year or late last year. I watched the entire series on Netflix. Great show.

Lost is another one. I started watching it over a year ago before it was removed from Netflix Canada. I'm watching it again now that I'm working in the US.

Funny you should mention Seinfeld and Barney Miller; these two went unnoticed by me until they had been on a while.

You and your wife might like House of Cards (Netflix) which has lots of intrigue.

There are plenty. But one that particularly comes to mind is Frasier.

For me it was The Sopranos.
Didn't start watching it until well into its 3rd season (after someone put a gun to my head), but then watched it from the beginning to catch up, and I was hooked.
One of the best.

I must be older than everyone. My favorite show was The Rifleman. Watching reruns these days, it amazes me how they managed to include a moral lesson in each episode. Much of the conflict was between good and evil where consequences for bad behavior were always shown, but without any blood and gore.

The first Star Trek episodes were much like this. I remember one episode in particular where Kirk was intervening in a ferocious battle between two civilizations where the members had half white and half black skin. After much killing, Kirk finally got around to asking them why they hated each other so much. One of the protagonists looked at him with disbelief (in his ignorance) and stated that surely he noticed that their adversaries were black on the right side of their face and they were black on the left. The absurdity of race related hate was never more eloquently stated and I have cherished that lesson all these years.

I wasn't oblivious to them at the time, watched them every week, but never caught all the content of "Rocky and Bullwinkle" or "The Bugs Bunny Show" until I was older. When I was a kid, I never understood why my father also liked these shows.
