For those of you who will be stuck inside all day, here is a picture of a Sphere Eclipse from the 1970s.

Default Welding mask will NOT WORK!

Hope I'm not too late for some of you but I understand that a welding mask will not be good enough to prevent eye damage. So be forewarned! It must be darker than the welder's mask. Hold up your camera flashlight to the filter. If you can see anything but a very faint light then it will not be strong enough. It's not worth permanent damage for a sneak peak.

Also find a shade tree and look down at the ground or sidewalk. You will see the eclipse projected through the leaves of trees. Discovered this years ago when I saw my first eclipse. Hundreds of little eclipses everywhere. Same idea as the shoe box with a hole in it.

Fake alarm.

I watched the eclipse in Scotland two years ago through my welders mask with a number 10 filter, and have suffered no eye damage whatsoever as a result.

I am watching the current eclipse at https://www.earthcam.com/events/sola...=solareclipse1

Well that was pretty interesting. Totality, in a clear blue sky here in N.W. Wyoming went to pretty dark and the temp dropped about 20 degrees.
During totally it was pretty cool no glasses needed .

We're about 12 minutes away from totality here in SC. Temps have already dropped noticeabley and the ambient light is such that I feel like I have sunglasses on when I don't.

It's getting a little darker here in DC. But, doesn't it get dark every night? Just checking.

That was spectacular. The coolest part was watching the moon's shadow race in from the west like a malevolent force, then getting to see some brighter stars/planets and the streetlights on for a couple of minutes. My son got a better pic than any of mine.

I've been chanting, smoking a sacred cigar and stuff to make the sun come back. I think its working but I don't know how much longer I can keep this up.

A little help, please!

I'm really happy for you but I stand by my original statement. I have no first hand knowledge of welders masks but thought if I could save someone some pain it was worth mentioning the possibility. Happy Eclipse Day everyone!

Just saw the 85% version in North Central Ohio.
We reversed our cameras on our Ipads as we found out you could do safely. When a medium density cloud passed in between us and the sun we could see the crescent sliver perfectly...cool beans!

That was pretty cool, especially since I never thought I'd see one. My friend had a welders mask that we took turns using.

I liked the post about the shadow of the moon running across the ground.

Default Post Your Eclipse Photos Here!

Here are my best Eclipse photos.

You can see the edge of darkness creaping up on the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Just before full darkness.

OK, here is what it looked like 28 miles NW of Chicago. It was very overcast and cloudy with layers of clouds moving to the North East. Waited for times when the layers separated enough to see the sun. I pointed the camera at the sun closed my eye and shot multiple images at a time. Here are a few of the better ones. Time wise this would have been full eclipse in downstate Illinois which would be a 5 1/2 hour, 360 mile drive south.

The brightness drove the metering crazy at times and I experimented with full frame exposure and then went to spot metering and shooting the sun off center.
