Default Jay Leno has a WWII RR Merlin 1650-1 Engine

And it runs.

Here is a great video about the Merlin (built by Packard).
There is an interesting history of this amazing engine.

You know, a couple of years ago a friend of mine who has done very well in Texas posted on Facebook a picture of a lovely, immaculate Rolls-built Merlin in his shop and said, "My latest acquisition. Can anyone identify it?" I identified it in a public post. Connie Edward's cache of Spanish-built Messerschmidt BF-109s (Hispano Buchons), Spits, and P-51, all powered by Merlins, had just gone up for sale.

So I asked my friend in a private mail, "Joe, what are you doing with a Merlin? Did you get one of Connie's planes?" He just sent me an eyebrow-wiggling smilie.

British motor cycling legend and all round top bloke Guy Martin has something similar.

Some of you may require subtitles, Guy's a fast talking north country boy, with an infectious enthusiasm for all things mechanical !

I got to witness three P-51s with Packard Merlins n full howl, taking off as a unit in 1995. That was impressive. I still haven't seen a movie that captured the low-end that just vibrates your chest.

I remember when V12 Merlins were top choice engine in Unlimited Class Hydroplane boat racing.

Jay Leno is quite the motorhead. He's from my hometown- grew up 1/2 mile from my wife.

You guys need to come visit me. I've got five working Merlins flying in a Spitfire, a Hurricane, a Mosquito, and a P-51, living right down the road from me at the Military Aviation Museum. Of course, there is also a DB601 in a BF109G and an Allison in a P-40, and then a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 in a Corsair, an R-1830-76 in a Wildcat, and then there's are the two FW-190 reconstructions and the ME-262 reconstruction... and that's just some of the fighters.

Fellow a couple hangars over from me has the world's largest collection of Allisons, of P-38 and P-39 fame, and keeps a demonstrator on a trailer for local shows.
