Default Assessing DVD Picture Quality????

Just purchased a rather pricy boxed DVD set of Homicide: Life on the Street. I've tried to manipulate the picture using TV controls but the colors remain really washed out. It came shrink-wrapped and NEW; but I'm wondering if the crappy color is due to the age of the show, this being a bad set of DVDs, or I just have not found the correct controls to beef up the color. FWIW Every other DVD and even television shows (despite my using a rooftop antenna) looks great. Any thoughts???

Not familiar with the show, but a google image search shows that images from the show (not cast photos) do seem a little dull/washed out.
I would think adjusting the contrast and saturation controls on your tv would fix it, though.

Thanks for the suggestions - tried those and it made no difference. FWIW Youtube videos of the show are much improved color so I'm wondering if the washed colors were part of the show's mood or if I got a bad set. I wouldn't be concerned except, as i said, it was pretty pricy....

DVDs are standard def. You can try to get more out of them, but in the end, they're still standard def. You have to bump up to Blu-ray discs to get hi-def stuff.

If adjusting the contrast and saturation controls doesn't do anything, check to make sure you haven't got the tv settings "locked" on something - my tv has various settings like 'music', 'theater', 'sports'...

There's another factor here: Because DVDs have a limited amount of memory, the video of most programs is digitally compressed. When the total program length they are attempting to fit on a DVD reaches a certain point they simply have to do it. If your video is compressed, the color depth is reduced. On some programs it is noticeable and others it isn't. I really don't know how to synthesize the the color depth that is lost in compression.

Where did you order from? I did some checking on Amazon & DVDTalk and this doesn't seem to be mentioned, so I'd consider contacting either the manufacturer or whoever you ordered from regarding the issue.
