Traveling update: this morning, we will load up on the ferry for the for the 22 mile trip from the mainland to San Juan Island. We spent 8 days in Phoenix, where they were having record heat and very low humidity. From there to Las Vegas. Two lane roads through the middle of Nevada and into Idaho, where things greened up and that low humidity eased a bit. As we rolled through Oregon and Washington, we went from having to run air conditioning all the time to needing heat at night.
From 116º in Phoenix, with 7% humidity, to 54º and 84% humidity (with light rain) currently in Anacortes, WA. And through it all, the X7 is content and sounds good. Work starts later this week. |

Into the summer contract for this summer's boat job. I had a bit of a break today - was on-call, but didn't get called in. Instead, I had some relaxing time, including a couple sessions with the X7.
It's been a bit more than a month now with the X7, and I find I am truly appreciating the comfortable size and fit with this instrument even more. And, of course, the sound. One more thing: it really is a very nice looking guitar. I wasn't sure about the Crystal Ice finish on the back and sides (before seeing it in person). I assume it is less expensive to finish it this way, compared to a gloss. Playing outside for a while today, I got to see that Crystal Ice in a completely different light: it has a sparkle to it - very striking! Only the player is going to see it, but I really like it. The temps have been cool since we arrived. OK, out on the boats, it has been wool caps and Gortex jackets weather. And, the X7 still sounds just as good as it did in the extreme heat and low humidity of the desert. If it were just for the lack of hassle with humidity, carbon fiber would be a smart choice... but it sounds good, too. Come for the durability, stay for the sound. |

Thanks for the update Captain Jim. I am living vicariously through your journey...
Were you able to take both the Emerald and the Shorty for the trip? Any problems with switching between the neck profiles? And finally...Have you spotted any mermaids that look like Darryl Hanna to send back to the mainland???

While the Blonde said there'd be room for another guitar, I opted to bring the Emerald and some other gear (cables, harmonizer pedal, etc), in case a gig comes up. So, the X7 is the one and only for this season. I played through all my guitars before leaving home. The N2 neck on the Shorty is thicker (depth), the X7 feels a little fuller just before the fretboard. Both are comfortable; no issue switching back and forth. Regarding mermaids: the Blonde still doesn't let me date, so I really haven't been looking. Since that "Daryl Hannah/Splash" reference is from 1984, some of the younger ones here may not understand. I have seen a couple Stellar Sea Lions... they might pass for blonde, but you'd have to have been at sea WAY too long or be wearing some serious beer goggles for them to pass as Daryl Hannah. |

A day off today, and the Blonde wanted to get out and about on the scoots (another passion of mine). It was a beautiful day, and when we got back, I took the X7 outside. As you can see, Izzy (our furry girl) enjoyed it, too...

Not much guitar/CF content in this post - showing a bit of our time here.
My job... Depending on my shift(s), I can usually get some guitar time in before or after. A day off today - no schedule, time to put some miles on the scoots and enjoy the X7 late this afternoon. In the glorious sunshine. On the road south today... A work day most often looks like this... http://captnjim.blogspot.com/2016/06...ul-cruise.html Driving our smallest boat... |

Wow... thanks for sharing your adventures!!! Now I have context why Rainsong puts sharks on their guitars....

Hmmmm... dorsal fins as a custom fingerboard inlay. Oh, I like that idea!

Rainsong originally started in Hawaii on the island of Maui. Sharks (mano) are a powerful spirit animal in Hawaiian culture and lore.
Love the orca shots, Jim. Reminds me of our times cruising the Inside Passage and Prince William Sound in Alaska. We mostly saw humpback whales, but in the southern reaches (Ketchikan) orcas were occasionally seen too. |
