714CE SD (guitar center)
Just went to GC and played one of these...it's a 714ce with a spruce top and diamond inlays especially made for GC...it was nice, but I really just wanted to try a cedar top 714ce, unfortunately GC didn't have one.
So, the question is this: What is the point of putting a spruce top on a 700 series guitar? I thought that's what the 800 series was for  Seems confusing to me.

Along with others have said the 700 series has less bling. Those 714s are some of the nicest sounding around in my opinion.

714ce with cedar here. Before I got this I played a few different ones that were around at various stores. The cedar ones do not stay in the store long. I walked in one day to GC and there it was on the wall. An 04, it couldnt have been in the store for more than a week. I love this guitar, it really is amazing. The spruce is basically an 800 series, but with the nice rosewood binding of the 700 series, and the understated classy look. ITs great but cedar is def what I would go with.

Thanks for the insight...I didn't realize the bracing differences...and I did think of the 800 series as being "blingy-er" so all valid points.
I asked the GC employee what the SD stood for and he was clueless...so thank god for the internet

the 'SD' designation is for 'S'pruce 'D'iamond -
the fretmarkers are the slotted diamond inlays that were used on the 500 series from '96 to '00 those inlays were also used on the 09 Spring 400 LTDs - gloss taz blackwood, ab rosette, maple binding/wedge imho, the 06 Fall 700LTDs had a little more going for them - engelmann top, maple binding/wedge & abalone rosette
