Playing along with music
Any thoughts on what components I would need to play along with music in a headset. First off I need the Electric/Acoustic guitar. After that what components do I need to play and hear myself play in a headset along with music.
Keep all this in mind. I'm airline pilot and spend many a night in hotels. The reason I thought of this is to play quitely and at the sametime keep expanding my playing. Any thoughts on what I need and also which Guitar? Thanks, RLB |

I have a ROCK BUG that works great for that. There are other options, but the ROCK BUG is bullet proof and will easily handle travel abuses. It has an internal 9 volt battery, or can be used with an inexpensive power supply. Most any guitar with electronics should work, as long as it meets your playing needs and is the right size for your travels. Hope this helps.

Seems to me that the Yamaha Silent Guitar is specifically designed for the sort of use you're envisioning...

I use a VOX AmPlug and an iPhone with my electric guitar to do this. For travel I have been thinking of getting one of these
http://www.travelerguitar.com/ or one of these http://www.miranda-tech.com/ I probably would have already bought a Traveler if they weren't made in China or a Miranda if they weren't so expensive ... Also, if you are as bad of a player as I am it helps to slow down the song (without changing pitch) with the iPhone app "Music Trainer" |

aside from the guitar, you could try one of these "personal amp"s into which you can plug an MP3 and play along
http://www.easounddesign.com/earwig.htm and on ebay here and here

A Tascam MP-GT1 Guitar Trainier. Load it up with MP3's, plug in your headphones, guitar, and play. You control everything, music pitch without changing speed (tune the music to your guitar), music speed without changing pitch (learn those hard solos at a speed you can handle), loaded with effects, and more. I have been using mine for 2 years and love it. Portable, rechargeable (via usb or 5v wall wart) and the battery lasts about 9 hours of continuous playing. They run about $200 USD.

Joe, that's the one!! Thanks.
And the Purser with the lightweight Yamaha, thank you. Any Guitar Shops in Manhattan? Just kidding. I'll wait till I get home to Scottsdale and look on Craigslist for the guitar. Now I get to buy an electric guitar? Kids will be shocked! All the best, Ron |
