3 or 4 $'s for a bag of things with a tortoise on, or it could be a turtle.

I'm a fingerpicker 99% of the time so the benefits of a good pick would be lost on me

I can't agree with this. Great tone is great tone, irrespective of what you're using or how much you paid for your plectrums. If you can't do it with a cheap pick an expensive one won't help, no matter what miracles the maker promises you.

True, as long as there is only one "great tone". Can you get the same "great tone" out of a Martin 0-18 as you can a D-18 as long as you use the same 50c pick?

Something like 20$ is enough for me, the pick I use are mainly Timber Tones clear and black horn , you can get them for 5 or 6 dollars in Europe , don't need to spend more, and especially not for a synthetic material

Why not? The guitar dictates how it will respond to your playing, and it's up to the player to recognise what a guitar's tonal strengths or weaknesses are, and work with them.

I have a couple of Charmed Life picks. I paid about $35 for the brown and $25 for the natural. I like them both and have not used any from the pile of other picks I have since I received the CL's.

But the players shouldn't recognize what the pick's tonal strengths and weaknesses are and work with them?

I am in this camp. I am relatively new to flatpicking so am still enjoying trying a bunch out and comparing. So far I really do enjoy the CL's.

Best,
Jayne

I bought a big bag of Fender Heavies.

Probably cost me $.40 each.

Winner!!!

Been using Fender Mediums since 1974. Fake turtle color.

I once bought Thins but hated them..

I have no idea what they cost. I usually buy two or three bags at a time and dump them in a small cup in my office. I tend to find them all over the house, in the cars, washer/dryer, bathrooms, jeans I haven't worn since last winter....

I bought 4 Blue Chips--I mean, who buys one pick? Also a couple Wegens. But they make my guitars sound dark and dull, so they're not my favorites. I like a lot of Dunlop picks: Primetone, Ultex, the purple ones with a turtle on them, etc. But I suck with a flat pick, so I finger pick most of the time, with or without a Fred Kelly thumbpick. I did get a manicure once, but that was a free sample, so guess it doesn't count.

About $30 for my Red Bear type F. I like Wegen Bluegrass picks too and they are a lot cheaper.

The slightest imperfection will cause a rasping sound - no room whatsoever for error, and each one is polished to a microscopically smooth finish.

They're superb picks and will last forever, but to be honest the cost of the material and specialist machining has risen so much recently that I can't even manufacture them for this price any more, so it's doubtful whether there will be any more...

Cheers,

Then I'm sure glad that I broke down & got mine when I did!
Thanks David!
