I remember those guitars at HGF 2011. So cool.

Any sound clips?
I am wondering if it has that same tone as the “black n white”?

Very cool to hear about all the Mayes guitars from that 2011 Healdsburg show... that was the only one I attended, and I managed to play each of John's guitars there... and they were each lovely instruments (although with all the noise at the show, I couldn't tell you what they sounded like!).

I didn't know that John Mayes was no longer building... if he's been ill, I wish him a full recovery. I agree with the sentiment that he is far too good a builder to not be putting his work "out there" into the guitar-playing world!

Did this guitar ever sell?

@jseth, this guitar is still available. Fully agreed on sentiments re. J Mayes. I hope for his rebound.

@palolowarrior, sorry for not having any sound clips. Best way to compare would be to have them side by side I suppose. I think the pink ivory is a much denser wood and results in a tight almost glassy quality in the sound.

Thanks for all the interest. Wishing all US viewers of this thread a Happy Thanksgiving Day!!! Hope you all have a wonderful day with your families and enjoy all that we are thankful for.

I got to play (or, at least, touch!) them all before the show. Although there were the normal variances (pink ivory, braz, wenge I think, and my smaller OO in mahogany) they shared John's "Eureka" top bracing and were all exceptionally lively, modern voiced, wide in their dynamic range, and (except for my redwood topped OO) topped with John's favorite - spruce.

John had to sell his tools and stock, but I will add my voice to "here's hoping" he gets back to building again someday soon. I know he would like to - just a tough couple of hills to climb before he can, I think.

Best,

Phil

I still consider this run of John's guitars to be his best - of all I've had the fortune to play. Don't be too distracted by the lush colors of this guitar or the immaculate inlay by Lavin... this guitar is a real player. Like black cocobolo, or African Blackwood, but with a bit of extra glassiness, or "tinkle" like a small bell.

The lucky buyer will have a treasure...

Best,

Phil
