What store was that? 1972, Chicago, Loop, Wabash Ave.
I got my Martin from an old-line dealer at this location, 45 years ago.
What was the store's name? I have no record of the buy, and would like to fill in some history.

Not enough info in the OP to give an answer. Wabash downtown there used to be Chicago's music district. Many instrument stores & related businesses.
All gone now. Last edited by frankmcr; 07-25-2017 at 02:43 PM. |

I know that I bought my first acoustic at the Lyon and Healy in that area back in 1972 - they had a huge Steinway piano showroom with the guitars in the back. Definitely a number of music stores in that general area during that time period.

I think I know what shop you are referring to Shortfinger. In 1976 I bought my D-18 (my first really quality guitar) from the Chicago Guitar Gallery. I remember the L-tracks on Wabash. I still remember the proprietor, Eric Prager, who was a very nice German man. My uncle took me up there with him, since he had already gone up there months earlier to buy his Martin, and he was familiar with their inventory. I recall there being lots of nice Guilds and Martins to choose from. I picked out my D-18 and asked Eric the price. He said "650, with the case". My uncle chimed in "and that includes the tax, right?". Eric just looked at me and smiled, and he said "if you twist my arm, OK!" I do hope that this is the same shop that you were thinking of, otherwise I've just bored you guys again with another old story!

Thanks, Mark. That sounds like it.
Chicago Guitar Gallery. Wabash under the ell. Not far from the Palmer House. I'm going to ask Martin, shoot them my model # and serial # and see if they know. I'll bet they do.

Wabash Avenue used to be the musical instrument place to be. They had Lyon and Healy and a host of others. As a trumpet player I would occasionally visit the Schilke trumpet factory.
Wabash also had some really cool camera stores. Altman Camera comes to mind where I bought my first two cameras.

Thats where I bought my first guitar, a 1975 Martin D35. $550 out the door. I tried to learn how to play it, from a girlfriend. Two months later she was gone so it sat in the blue case, humidified religiously, with the original strings, until 1994 when a coworker learned I had it. He offered me $1100...SOLD! I had no interest in playing at that time. He flipped it in a couple months for a nice profit. Wished I had kept it.

Chicago Guitar Gallery! In 1972 I bought my first professional grade guitar there. A sunburst, maple neck Stratocaster with case for $350. Four years later it was in my car when the car got stolen. I never saw either one again.

Hope that helps you out! I remember my passage into D-18 ownership quite well, even tho it was a loooooong time ago! We lived in Northwest Indiana so it wasn't too long of a drive to get to downtown Chicago. That shop was pretty famous back in the day. It was said that the late, great Steve Goodman of "City of New Orleans" and "Lincoln Park Pirates" fame was a frequent customer there. I tried out LOTS of awesome guitars at that shop, but took home the Martin. Good times.
