Default New to plugging in...could someone explain N DEP and N FRE?

Hi all,

I have a http://www.simonandpatrick.com/40483...rosewoodch.htmSimon and Patrick Showcase Rosewood Concert Hall with B-Band A6T 'Dual Source' pickup. I know pretty much nothing about the science of sound amplification...I have a small Fender Acoustasonic amp that my daughter uses and I decided to plug in and play today.

I have no idea what the n dep and N fre dials do, nor the phase button. I did play around and heard some differences, so I am fine with blindly adjusting them until I feel it sounds good, but I was wondering if anyone could explain in layman's terms what is happening when I adjust any of those?

Here is a picture of the electronics:

Thanks for any explanation you can give!

Default Notch filter explanation

Hi
Often when playing amplified your guitar will resonate to a certain sound frequency and make a low continuous noise called feedback.

The two controls you identify are a built in feedback control system, often called a notch filter. If you experience feedback with your guitar through an amp or sound system you can reduce or maybe eliminate it using this control. The N Fre knob allows you to select the frequency of the offending feedback and the N Dep control is how much you want to drop that frequency to reduce the feedback. Some amps and sound systems have this built in but you have it built in your guitar. Cool !

You can look it up online re: in and out-of-phase signals but the phase button also helps with feedback and is very simple to use---your instrument is usually going to sound better with that button pressed in or out so always try both when you play live. I would try this first before utilizing the notch.

http://www.b-band.com/uploads/Produc...A5T_manual.pdf

From the manual :

6. N DEP (NOTCH DEPTH ROTARY CONTROL)
7. N FREQ (NOTCH FREQUENCY ROTARY CONTROL)
The two rotary controls are for feedback control. Feedback is
the undesirable sound that sometimes occurs at medium to
loud volume levels and sometimes when standing close to the
speaker that is reproducing the guitar sound.
The N DEP (notch depth) and N FRE (notch frequency) can
help control feedback.
The N DEP at “0” is off; at “-6” it cuts the level of the N FRE by
six decibels; and “- 15” by fifteen decibels.
The N FRE indicates a range of frequencies that can be affected
from 100 Hz to 330 Hz.
Set up by first turning the N DEP off to the full counter clockwise
position “0”. Set the rest of the controls to suit your taste
taking care that as you do this control any initial feedback by
turning down the volume control. Once you set your sound turn
the volume control up. As you reach a feedback threshold and
hear feedback, turn the N DEP up half way and using the N FRE
find the frequency where the feedback is reduced. Once this is
found you can move the N DEP either way to make this effect
stronger or weaker.
The Notch Depth and Frequency should be used sparingly as
they will affect the tone.
Once you experiment with the settings of these controls you will
find more about how they work.
8. PHASE (PHASE BUTTON)
The PHASE button controls the phase of the pickup in relationship
to the phase of the speaker(s) that are being used with
the system.
Pushing this button in will put the pickup “out of phase” with the
speaker(s). When the button is out the pickup are “in phase.”
This control is most useful for feedback control and will provide a
tone color. Once you experiment with the settings of this control
you will find more about how it works

A few suggestions to try:
  • Keep the N DEP at 0 until you experience feedback.
  • Experiment with the AST/UST slider to get a feel for the different blends of the two pickups.
  • Experiment with the two phase button settings (one position will almost always sound better to you - but it will not always be the same setting!)
  • Have fun!

Thanks you three. Quick and easy explanations. I never even thought to search for a manual for it, I figured it would assume I knew what it all was and what they did.
