I play a bouzar...an Irish bouzouki in a tenor guitar body, a la Andy Irvine's Sobells. Mine was made by Nova Scotia luthier Russel Crosby based on a 40's Martin 0 tenor. It has a sitka spruce top on a stained curly maple body, has a 23" scale and 1.5" nut width (and I think it sounds fantastic). I tune it GDGC or GDAD.

Hear it...

Hehe.... Painful memories. At our old club (which featured a lot of ethnic music) we used to have a Greek gentleman show up with his electric bouzouki. Beautiful instrument, all inlaid and decorated...
However, he always played LOUD and not very accurately.

We used to go to a Greek restaurant at the time, and the crusty old Greek waiter said... "That guy... He plays loud to cover up his mistakes!" We had to agree...

I play irish bouzouki! I will say that it's a frustrating instrument because they are not very popular. At the moment I own three. The first was a cheap celtic star model that I got off of ebay. It came with a pickup and actually wasn't that bad. I then had a custom bouzouki made by a local luthier. It was by no means high end but it has a great deep sound. Recently I purchased a trinity college bouzouki and installed a Headway pickup. I absolutely love using it live now!

"Irish", I suppose. I generally play everything on it that I play on mandolin, plus extra rhythm stuff as the register is appropriate. GDAE tuning. Mine was made by www.houseguitars.com

Mine is cedar top, walnut back/sides, ebony fretboard, Gotoh 510s, purpleheart rosette. If I was to do it again I'd get a slightly wider neck, but it's fine.

Not yet, But I'm seriously considering building one once I'm finished with my fiddle.

I mess around on a Trinity College octave mandolin....kept it short scale (20") to stay closer to guitar size. Bouzouki just looked crazy long to me.

And yet the typical scale length of a bouzouki is just 26", only about 1/2" longer than a standard scale guitar, and 20" is WAY short for "closer to guitar size" (more like requinto territory). Just sayin'...
