I have an '08 Cargo and iirc, it came with Elixir PB Nano lights. That happens to be my preference on all my guitars, so that's what I re-string the Cargo with.

Same here...with short scale the mediums bring out the tone on the Cargo even though for its size has good bass even with lights.

I bought a used Cargo from a member here that was strung with, believe it or not, silk and steel strings. That was a few years ago, and I've been using Martin Standard 11.5-47 gauge Silk and Steel strings ever since on that guitar. Silky smooth tone and playability, with no loss in volume. I'll be giving them a try on my Rainsong Parlor if the Elixirs it came with ever wear out.

Ted - Do those silk and steel hold up to a pick on that guitar or are they only good for finger style?
Thanks! |

Another string question/issue
Hey all - Not to highjack this thread but it made me remember I have a string-related issue on my Cargo that I'd love the forum's opinion on.
When I bought my recent, Peavey-made Cargo, it had Elixir light gauge strings installed from the factory. Good enough strings but I decided to change to mediums for all the common-wisdom reasons (increased tone, string tension on the super-short scale). The strings work fine (Elixir medium PBs) but since I've started using them, I notice that my low E bridge pin no longer seats all the way. Apparently the pins and holes are set up specifically for light strings(?) and there's no relief slot to give any extra room what-so-ever. It's pretty much a cosmetic issue as I have no tuning or tone problems but I'm going to have to eventually get a local luthier to fix the situation. Is this just my guitar or has anyone else with a Peavey Cargo had a similar experience? Thanks! |
