This is my cover of Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman's great song, "Time After Time." I wanted to do an acoustic version of this song, but kept thinking of Larry Carlton's huge chorus effect used on his Gibson ES-335 electric guitar when Cyndi Lauper recorded this in 1983. After some experimentation, I decided that my Guild F512 12-string worked best for me, since the 12-string has a natural chorus effect. I love this song!

As a contrast to the above video, consider my recording of "Time After Time" on Soundcloud from an album I did for my father's 82nd birthday in 2004, 13 years ago now. The electric guitar used is my Gibson ES-335. My Martin D-35 is also in there, but you really can't hear it until the end of the song. Of course, there's a whole bunch of other stuff in there, too!

I just recently posted "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" in Show & Tell, and the song is such a sad song, that I decided I needed a love song that offers some real hope. So "Time After Time" is it. I just recorded this today.

Thank you for listening!

- Glenn

What beautiful arrangement of a wonderful song. I have been working on a version myself, but your guitar arrangement is just out of my current reach!

Thanks for sharing and thanks for inspiring me to be a little better.

Very nicely done Glenn

I listened to the other versions.
Still like the original .
IMHO Nobody can touch Cindi's version performed live here:
She's so unusual and danged cute!

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for your comments and for the kind words!

I must say that I agree with you about Cyndi Lauper's version, and that's why I tended to arrange my version to mostly use her arrangement. When I think of this song, her version is what I hear in my head. To me, that version will always be the standard!

Thanks for listening!

Hi Michael,

Thanks so much for your kind words and for taking the time to comment! I'm so very glad you liked my version -- there are so many really good versions out there, including the original.

I am thinking of doing an instructional video (tutorial) on this song. I hope I can show that the song is not out of your reach.

Thanks again for your kind words!

- Glenn

Hi Glenn! Late to the party on this one, but SO ENJOYED this rendition you performed and provided for us!
The guitar arrangement is super and your voice/register with this song seems totally in sync and somehow for me, gives this song extra "Ummph"!

Also, your phrasing and style bring the lyrics from this song out for me with new meaning and clarity which I don't get from the original from Lauper.......just me I guess!

The extra inclusions of Eva and the acoustic group were amazing and thanks for including those for reference. Eva......OMG.......no words...........!!!!
Enjoy the day!
Fred

Hi Fred,

Thank you so much for your observances on this video and on my arrangement of the song.

I have been messing around with this a little this morning thinking about how to put together a tutorial video for those interested, and ironically, more ideas have occurred to me on how to play this song. It makes me wonder if I recorded this too early, before I was really ready. But, nothing will ever be perfect...

On Saturday, I started working on this, my wife was off somewhere, and I had two hours before I had to meet her, so I thought, "You should just do this now!" So I did. And I'm sure you know how this kind of thing works: sometimes you are just lucky. And sometimes not.

At first I thought, "You are never going to be able to come up with something as magic as some of these other YouTube videos..." But by the time I got a reasonable take, I thought, wow, that really seems to work okay...

Regarding the lyrics and meaning of the song, I think that keeping the arrangement simple -- just one guitar and one voice -- really helps with that. I also did some studying about the background behind this song before even trying to work out an acoustic arrangement on Saturday, and I think that little bit of immersion helped me understand the song better.

So... sometimes a person is just lucky.

Regarding Eva Cassidy, she had such a voice and such a way with music. Listening to her sing just gives me chills and often brings tears to my eyes. I'm so glad we have some videos and sound recordings of her so that we can remember what a gift she was.

Thanks again for your thoughtful comments Fred!
