Default Never mess with cello strings

Don't want to test their tension. I'm never going to test their tension. They are scary to tune.

Not on a cello, they aren't scary.

Just recently got a 4/4 cello. Never miss with the tension. You might get away with on guitar, but don't think about it on a cello.

Okay, I'll bite....

What happened that caused you to come to this conclusion?

Never had one break on me and can't remember anyone else ever telling me it happened to them. I'm sure it could, but most cello players tend to use standard turning and aren't trying to see what they can get away with.

Saw that happen to the cello player in a string quartet headed by Itzhak Perlman about 35 years ago - never seen it before or since...

Not at all as long as you proceed carefully (as indeed you should with any stringed instrument), after which you might want to learn how to actually play the cello - lovely instrument, and my favorite of all the orchestral strings...

I agree with you about the cello. Fantastic voice.

Just had the g string snap. It flew off. Scary. Never mess with cello strings. Cello strings are more brutal than you think.

Some friendly suggestions:
1] Heed your own best advice before you wind up seriously injured;
2] Restring your instrument and get it to an orchestral string luthier soon, in the event it suffered further damage - at the very least it'll probably need to have the bridge reset, and possibly the soundpost as well;
3] Learn to play it - as Growler and I said before, it's a magnificent instrument;
4] Take control NOW - it's not easy but you can do it, one step at a time, with a bit of determination - you've got some great people here on the AGF forum behind you - and if not, please seek qualified assistance...

All the best...

I'm trying. I got my D up to F#. Got the A up to B. On average cello strings are 50% of breaking tension in standard tuning. That would be a safe bet. I like my cello. I love playing it. Not as interested as guitar strings. Guitar you can get away with it more than a cello.

OK, Guitar344, I have to ask. Why are you tuning your strings up well beyond their intended tension? That isn't very healthy for you, for the instrument, or for the strings. And when doing so, why is it surprising that they break? Am I missing something here?

PS: I did a search on your posts, and you were doing tightening guitar strings to the breaking point back in early August. Hmmmm. No disrespect intended, but you don't get to string or tune any of my instruments. I prefer that they remain intact without bridges pulled off or broken braces.
