Unfortunately, this one won't be ready for Woodstock but I'll still have some nice ones with me! Make sure to come by and introduce yourself!

Your work really is inspiring! Love the sense of design, and your focus on cohesiveness. I'm looking forward to trying them out in Memphis!

The detail on the rosette and end graft is spectacular.

Thanks! I really do enjoy designing the aesthetic elements of a build and particularly when I have free reign on a "presentation" model built for a show. Lot's of chances to push some of my limits (and patience!).

This guitar is still moving along, though I've been sidetracked slightly by another exciting project that I'll start posting about soon. As expected, the binding process (considering the cutaway and arm bevel) is taking a good bit of time. Here I'm gluing the macassar ebony veneer on the arm bevel...

And in process of binding the cutaway point...

Hopefully I'll be able to finish up the rest of the binding work today and I'll post some final pictures!

Mike

Finished up the binding on this guitar a few days ago. It's a bit hard to see in this picture, but the veneer on the arm bevel is actually 3 pieces. Each piece is slightly rotated so that the grain runs somewhat parallel to the direction of the arm bevel and flows in and out of the binding strips...

Like the last cutaway I posted about, I decided to cap the cutaway with the grain orientated the same way as the binding strips. To my eyes this nicely frames the sides...

Still a little bit of cleaning up and tweaking, but for the most part the woodwork on the body is done! The next steps will have to wait until next week -- just arrived in NY last night and am about to head up to the Woodstock show for setup. Hopefully I'll be meeting some of you in person this weekend!

Mike

With Memphis just around the corner, it's way past time I brought everyone up to speed on this guitar! This was my first fan-fret and with the addition of a neck elevation and flush to the heel cutaway this guitar definitely had it's trickier moments.

Here's a shot of the fully adjusted and fit neck...

And a beautiful walnut back with it's first touch of finish...

The end-graft after the first french polishing session...

One step that was a little bit nerve wracking was gluing the bridge. After years of gluing perpendicular bridges, positioning a "crooked" bridge was definitely something different!

With so much black dust, I figured a black and white fretting photo seemed appropriate (plus I like messing with my new camera phone)...

With strings for the first time!

I'm super happy with the sound so far. Still a bunch of tiny jobs to finish up over the next few days (pick guard, truss rod cover, buffing, etc.) but I definitely foresee more fan-frets in my future.

If you make it down to Memphis (which you should!) then make sure to come by and give it a try!

Mike

Everything looks great, I love the cutaway flush to the neck, but really outstanding inlay on the endplate. That is really cool!

Wow- that's a wonderful looking guitar! I've always wanted to try a fan fret, but being a lefty they are few and far between! 😉

I must say that yours looks spectacular Mike!
