awww NUTS, my nuts not loose!
There were two threads recently about gluing nuts.
I restored a guitar and sold it, so I knew the guitar very, very well. The owner sold it back to me (for which I am happy) but apparently he wanted to raise his action and had someone replace the nice Tusq nut with a really horrible plastic nut. It was heavily glued in place and tore out wood under it and chipped the headstock overlay. I see this so frequently and I typically will file the slot flat, and have to put mahogany strip in there to build a new floor in the nut slot. I wish people would stop over-gluing nuts.

Agree that heavy gluing is a bad thing, but a small drop of glue in the center on the nut slot should not cause a problem. I dip a toothpick into a dab of glue and then dab one small dot onto the slot. HOW the nut is removed is also important. Gently tapping the nut from the side (small dowel and small hammer) will break it loose without tearing out the wood so long as it wasn't heavily glued.

God, I hate that too! The amount of downforce pressure the strings will produce is more than sufficient. [emoji42]

I believe that the nut should be glued in, but doing it incorrectly is worse than not doing it.
The correct method is to glue the nut to the end of the fingerboard, and keep the glue away from the bottom of the nut slot and headstock overlay. That way, the nut is glued to endgrain, and can be easily removed without damage. That's from Cumpiano & Natleson.
