Thx for the background check! That Somy of Pauls has been haunting me as well for years. That soundclip is great! And the carved rosette is a stunnner.

The Buendia tone indeed is a sweet one. For me it has a kind of a slight nylon tuch to it. 12 fret and Jumbo is definately worth considering!

Best of luck on your build. Met Leo at Woodstock this year - what a great guy and amazing builder. The video of Paul's Somogyi was one of the first times I've heard Ervin's guitars, and been hooked ever since.

The box is bound and ready for the neck:

The neck is roughed out and the headplate is installed. Leo says, "It's getting close to leave, ready for finish. I'm super excited." He's not the only one.

Here's the endgraft. This instrument also features a Manzer wedge for comfort in such a large guitar, so the bass side (right) is thinner than the treble side.

The fretmarker positions are mapped out on the fingerboard:

The Amboyna fretmarkers are inlaid at frets 5, 7, 9, 12 and 15. Note the positioning pins through the fret slots at frets 2 and 9, which hold the fingerboard in place against the neck blank. Note also that the octave fretmarker at fret 12 is a little longer.

The fingerboard is glued to the roughed-out neck. Note the cardboard 'shield' taped to the top to protect it during this phase of the build process. Next up is shaping the neck to match the neck profile of my Circa and Bashkin...

Thanks, Nootis.

This is the seventh instrument I've commissioned since my first (in 1980 with John Monteleone), so I've been down this road before with several other luthiers, and thought I knew what to expect. But even I have been a little startled by how fast Leo has been working, to the point that I checked with him to make sure he was including everything I asked for (He is).

Consider that Leo started this guitar less than a month ago and even with a goodly handful of requested custom features, it's already nearly ready to go into finish. Apparently, his time with Ervin Somogyi trained him well to work efficiently, with great focus and attention to the highest quality standards...

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on it – and a lot sooner than I expected.

The mahogany neck is now attached and shaping has begun, to match the neck profile of my Bashkin and Circa. That profile, BTW, is John Slobod's rounded V shape, based on that of a late-30's Martin. I've specified it on three other guitars and find it perfect for my hands.

My thanks to Dream Guitars, who were able to take measurements of my Circa's profile and pass the specs along to Leo. Leo's comment when he sent these photos was, "BTW, I may change my standard neck profile to your specs. It feels amazing."

Detail of the heel and ebony heelcap awaiting the gentle touch of the rasp:

Time for the EVO frets to be installed. It'll be ready for the finisher soon...

Leo tells me the guitar has now gone off for finishing, so these will probably be the last photos for a while until it comes back all shiny and ready for the last steps on its way to becoming a guitar – gluing the bridge, installing the hardware, then strings... And finally, it will have a Voice...

A last shot of the raw wood of the back and interrupted backstrip:

Here's the completed heel:

The headstock's profile. Love the b/w/b binding and purfling everywhere on this guitar:
