Default '97 Martin HD-28LSV with Satin Top

My 1997 Martin HD-28LSV has a satin finish on its Adi top. Sides and back are glossy like normal. Ive not seen this on any other Martin and was wondering if it was a 1 year only thing or custom ordered that way? Thanks

Not to argue a point, but according to my info from Martin, there was only one HD-28LSV made in 1997.

2005 – 131

2004 – 95

2003 – 81

2002 – 208

2001 – 147

2000 – 138

1999 – 127

1998 – 291

1997 – 1

Mr. Carmen A. Cortez

I wouldn't count on that. Martin's Customer Service database query will turn up the number of guitars shipped as the number made during a certain year, shipped not stamped. There are very likely several more LSV's with 1997 serial numbers. We've seen this with other models too, including the D-18A. Customer Service info says 7 were made in 2005, but the build records show 51 with 2005 serial numbers in several different batches.

To the OP's point, I'd like to get a closeup look at it. I've never seen a satin finish on just the top of a Style 28 guitar. Not that it's impossible, but it would be odd. Back in the 70's and 80's Martin offered (though not well advertised) as satin finish informally known as a "TV finish" meant to minimize glare on camera. That was usually on the whole body though.

I'll take some close-up pictures of the top when I get home. It had a 1997 serial number the last time I looked at the data base but, I'll fire off an email to Martin to confirm. I have seen several other's advertised as '97 models though.

Also remember that the Martin serial number list shows the LAST number of the year, not the first. People often make the mistake of dating a guitar early by one year.

That sounds very strange. Like you said, calling Martin would be best.

Good points, Todd. (For a real challenge, try to determine the build year of an old Gibson.)

My LSV serial number begins with 630; according to Martin's database that I've seen, that makes it a 1998; one of the early ones, but likely not the first. Gloss top finish.

No . All original. Just had a dull finish on the top. I actually like it as it looks older than it is.

Ahh. Mine starts with 650 so I guess it’s a 98. I didn’t know their serial numbers were listed as the lady number for the year. Thanks

Its hard tio photograph but maybe you can tell from this picture how dull the top is. I guess that someone in the past could have rubbed it with fine steel wool or something. I think I could easily buff it out to a gloss.

I like the way your top looks! I had a hand rubbed finish on my Lowden Sitka top and loved it...I would love it on both my D18 & 000-18 rather then the gloss.

Yeah...looks great to me. I have always liked matte or satin finishes.

Here's a note that gets lost sometimes.. The HD-28LSV used fine herringbone on the top has opposed to the regular herringbone used on the HD-28V.

The pic shows a 2000 HD-28V on the left beside a 2001 HD-28LSV on the right.
