New D-28 v New Coke
Why is Taylor not celebrating? How can you redesign all your flagships without confessing something?
New Budweiser! Better! More flavor! Now the King of...the King of....well, better!

Honestly, I don't think the various guitar makers spend a lot of time and energy hating on one another.
That activity is more of a forum thing in my mind.

Because Martin isn't silly enough to think these are better, rather just different???

Because if they didn't make changes, there would be no reason to drive up the value of pre-whatever models. I am now the proud owner of a pre-imagination D-28.

At least they are going to NAMM.

Well, I'd be more inclined to buy a D28 or D18 now the string spacing is wider. That skinny neck put me off in 2007.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of people who have the "old" versions would be willing to buy a "new" version whereas they likely would not buy another of one they already have.
Martin is in the business of selling new guitars, and this will surely help them toward that goal.

I like the new ones much better. The new d28 has the 1 3/4 inch nut and forward shifted bracing. I’m actually trying to sell my d28 Authentic 1937 and replace it with one of the new standard d28. I would end up with some extra cash, an adjustable truss rod, and a drop in saddle that isn’t glued in.

I’m with you bro’. I’m still pissed off that I can’t have a car with drum brakes, no seat belts and an ashtray. The MAN is holding me down.

Trust me, that "New Coke" thing is never going to fly. People who like Pepsi will still drink Pepsi, and people who like Coke will switch to Dr. Pepper.
As for the new Martins? No clue. Because people who like Martins will still like Martins, but maybe this will give rise to the new line of Pre-change Martins. I don't know... I bet they sell a bunch of them, though. |

I think the biggest competitor of Martin is probably used Martin's, without change I'm sure the used market affects sales of the new market. I personally like the changes they have been making to the standards.

Wider neck? Wider string spacing? Not exactly.
Wider at the nut but the "new" pa taper means a narrower neck all the way down and also results in a narrower string spacing at the bridge. |

Martin is absolutely going to KILL IT with the 1 3/4 nut MLO/PA taper neck across its entire standard series line. You watch.

Great move by Martin. Kinda follows what Andy Powers has done with Taylor's line up. As long as they keep the classic standards.....
